Fentanyl/ Narcan

Anonymous
My DH was reading about the fentanyl crisis tonight and saying “at some point” we should get Narcan to have on hand in case our DDs or their friends ever overdose.

Right now our DDs are 6 and almost 11 and the 11 year olds interest skew young so it doesn’t feel necessary. Do you have Narcan in your home? At what age? Do your teeens / tweens know it’s there and how to use it?

No, we don't have it.

Have a 20 yr old and a 17 yr old.

We don’t. 20, 18, and 14 year old.

I have it in my bag that goes everywhere with me and my high school student has it in his backpack.

I don’t have it specifically for him. I have it because it’s free, and it could save someone’s life. I have a cpr mask on my keychain for the same reason. It was free from my work and you never know. If epipens were free, I’d throw one in my backpack too.

We do, our kids in college have it as well.

Narcan is free for DC residents, not sure about MD or VA. You can walk into any pharmacy and they'll give it to you. You can also order online. This page has DC info: https://dbh.dc.gov/page/where-can-i-get-naloxone-dc

I keep it in our house. I know neighbors that do, as well, and we all just consider it a basic community service to have it on hand.

I hope to god it is never needed for my MS kid -- we talk about fentanyl every time it is in the news -- or ever any of his friends but kids don't always make the best decisions. He knows about it.

We know a family who just lost their teen son to a fentanyl OD in the DC suburbs. It is happening here and it is very real and deadly.

I have it. I live in a neighborhood where it’s not unusual to see people who are strung out and possibly unconscious from drugs, so I got some for free at a clinic. But I have discovered that I’m not inclined to go up to a sleeping stranger, try to wake him/her, and then stick meds up his or her nose without permission.

Yes I have it. They know and are trained.

My son was prescribed opioids after surgery and the prescription came with two doses of Narcan. I sent one to college with my freshman and have the other at the house.

I’ll probably get some Narcan. I think my DS (11) is still to young to carry it but we’ll discuss when he goes to HS.

Not another Narcan post. These come up every freaking month. I’m going to asks Jeff to close it.

Narcan? Yes. It's free with an opiod prescription, and if you don't have one, there are other options for getting it free as well.
