DH just started a new job and won’t be eligible for scheduled vacation time off until this time next year.
The thought of not taking a family vacation for 12-21 months (September 2024, plus the school year, unless we travel during breaks) feels absolutely daunting—a vacation on the horizon is what gets me through hard days. He will have some scheduled three-day weekends, but that’s not enough to fly anywhere. Getting a hotel close to home feels a little foolish, and so does a road trip, however short, for only three days. So sell me on “staycations” or even vacationing where you live. Is it worth the money? |
| You should reconsider three day weekends. There are many places to go within striking distance. |
| This job’s PTO policy seems like bullshit. He should have told them he had a planned vacation when he was offered the job. |
This is what I told him! |
| Are you open to taking vacations alone or just with kids? we have taken longer vacations were DH was not available the entire time so he would would fly out for just a few days. |
| What the heck kind of job is this? I can’t even imagine. |
| Long weekend in NYC plus take the kids somewhere DH doesn't want to go (do a couple trps with just one kid of that makes sense). |

Definitely any change in routine, where you are disconnecting from tech esp, can be refreshing and re-energizing.
Three days is a nice length- not so long that lots of prep is needed, two nights away to refresh. It’s not about how far you go. Consider human powered travel eg a cycling trip, a backpacking and camp trip, canoe or kayak, with camp or stay in a cottage, cabin etc.... these are well suited for shorter timeframes. |
| What is the logic behind denying vacation time for a year? Is he also denied sick time? I’ve worked in corporate for a long time and never heard of such a thing. |
|
What industry won't let you take vacation for 12 months after a start date??
Maybe he should call in sick for 2 days (or tell them he has Covid) to couple with a 3 day weekend and you guys can somewhere then. |
|
It depends how much total vacation time he has for the summer of 2025 and whether you work and your own vacation time.
If I had enough vacation days, I’d still take a shorter vacation with the kids while dh is working over the summer, & prioritize the long weekends for shorter travel or staycation with DH. |
This, be sick on Friday, fly out Thursday, fly back late Monday. |
| I’ve never heard of such a policy. Are you sure your DH just doesn’t want to take a vacation in the first year and is telling you he can’t? |
| Agree with PPs. This should be moved under jobs forum because this is highly irregular and restrictive. |
Lots of cities in driving or short flight distance are fun for a weekend, or a nearby cabin or beach or whatever. |
