Please help settle a friendly debate between me and my oldest child, a freshman attending homecoming for the first time.
Do they mix in slower songs where kids ask others to dance, dance with their date or otherwise dance in pairs? DC insists this is a thing of my 'ancient' past and that the vast majority of kids wouldn't be caught dead slow dancing. There weren't any couple dances at the 8th grade dance/party, but I always assumed that things would change in HS. Am I completely old and out of touch? |
I think that they do not slow dance together as boy/girl unless they are #couple.
Girl friends (as in buddies, not lesbian girlfriends) will slow dance together, probably to get good pictures for social media. The kids usually dance in one giant mosh pit, without the actual running into each other and body slamming of the 90s. |
My kid reported there weren’t any slow dances at *prom.* That blew my Gen X mind. |
No slow dances according to my kid who graduated in June. |
Weird. I thought that was kinda part of the whole prom thing. Romance and all. |
Why no slow dance? |
It doesn’t seem about romance anymore. It’s more about photos and going with friends. I’m a HS teacher and it’s more common for me to hear groups talk about how they stopped by to homecoming or prom. The real events were the photos before, the party bus and whoever’s house they were hanging out at either before or after. It’s not necessarily even a drinking party but sometimes a buffet of food put on by parents for the friends. The dance itself seems of very little importance. |
That is blowing my GenX mind too. But the power ballads are long gone. If not for the slow dance at various school dances, I would have missed out on the first kiss with one boy in jr high and two in high school. Something in the intimacy of a slow dance sets the mood just right for a first smooch. 💕 |
Madison HoCo, no slow dances in our three years so far. Most of the kids seem to prefer it. A lot of them go as groups, and many who do have dates REALLY don't want to do that awkward Sixteen Candles slow dance thing with someone they kina didn't want to go with anyway. |
+2 at the last two HoCo dances. |
