| I have always loved ceiling fans, but that was paired with old school HVAC systems that were either on or off. I'm wondering if indoor ceiling fans are no longer necessary, with the new systems that run pretty much continuously. Anyone have strong feelings or experiences either way? |
| I have ceiling fans and I love them, mostly for the times I have the hvac off and the windows open. |
| Our house has 12 foot ceilings, and I’ve found that ceiling fans are still useful for air circulation. I also find it easier to sleep with a slight breeze. |

Old school HVACs had the option to run the fan continuously independent of cool/heat.
But ceiling fans are awesome no matter what so you get a direct breeze. |
| Ceiling fans also help individualize room temps. |
I built my house a couple yrs ago and put ceiling fans in all bedrooms and the living room. We use the bedrooms every single day and living room in summer, not bc the HVAC is faulty, but bc w breeze is nice, especially when sleeping. It also cuts down on ac use (slightly). |

Definitely not redundant. I sleep with it on low throughout the year, just because I like the feel of air flow.
Every bedroom, family room, and screened porch have ceiling fans. MIL’s previous house had two in the kitchen when she was going through “that transition.” |
Not sure why you ac runs continuously... |
| I just bought a house and there are a million ceiling fans all over the place. I thought ceiling fans were tacky and was considering removing them all. Are they "ok" now? maybe just in bedrooms but not in living areas? Thanks - I'm design-challenged..... |
Are you my MIL? No. Even if they are tacky we live in the south and they are necessary. |
DP. It's not the AC that runs continuously but the fan. I have mine run continuously year round because I've got a filter on the HVAC unit and it improves air quality running continuously. |
| My home office with its computer, printer, desk lamp etc. (with the door closed), gets warmer and stuffier than the other rooms upstairs and the hallway. Having a ceiling fan helps a lot. Does not look great or sleek for magazine photo ops, but gets the job done. |
OP here- maybe ‘continuously’ was an overstatement. The newer 5 stage or multi stage inverter systems mean that the system can run at 40%, 50%, 60% etc capacity. Rather than just ‘on or off’. It’s also different from just running the whole house fan - since the system is cooling (or heating) and not just moving air. The way it was explained to me: multi stage HVAC is like dimmer switch for your system. That said, all the above posts were really helpful. Seems like a few well placed fans would still be useful. |
too much tech for my taste. harder to maintain/repair |
Why are you running your system continuously? Is it necessary? We like to have the windows open and have the ceiling fans going for circulation. |
