carnival cruise mystery, man has not been located

Anonymous
Should I post this in Travel or Off-Topic?

Have we had a thread on here about the missing man Kevin McGrath? He went missing on a Carnival cruise the night before they returned home. His BIL saw him at 2am-ish, and then his family expected to see him when they woke for breakfast. Nothing. It was a huge family trip. His family also says he was definitely not suicidal.

People are saying their security alerts for man overboard were not tripped, nothing about him falling on camera.

What happened? Is there a serial killer on cruises? (Ok, maybe I'm jumping to conclusions).

And, the investigation didn't start off well. The ship just went out onto the next cruise... did someone stay in his room even though they needed to check for evidence? Did they at least block off the associated rooms??

He probably fell overboard by accident and it was reported too late to really do anything. Those ships are huge. Do they have alarms everywhere?

He's in the laundry chute?

I’m sure he fell

The cruise line didn't notify Miami police until everyone had disembarked, and has been removing posts about the missing man from their FB page.

Hmmm. Very Waystar Studios Cruise Lines...

Side bar but I wonder how often people fall overboard. My husband wants our family to go on a cruise and I have to admit, this is a big fear. (Sorry to derail.)

I was JUST going to say - is he a RPI?

They have cameras everywhere. The most likely answer is that he went overboard. Now, fell/jumped/pushed is a separate question, but they likely have the footage to figure a lot out about his final hours.

This article (about a similar disappearance, but with a happier ending) says 212 people went overboard from 2009-2019 https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/cruises/2023/02/22/cruise-ship-overboard-detection-system/11172790002/
That's really low. If you don't drink to excess and you do watch your kids and have everyone follow the ship's rules (especially in bad weather) the odds of going overboard are really tiny--far less than the odds of other types of injuries on or off a cruise ship. I can think of many other reasons not to go on cruises, and I don't like them myself, but fear of going overboard is not a logical reason to avoid them.

This sucks: "The Miami-Dade Police Department stated that since the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Missing Persons Unit (MPU), was only notified of the disappearance after the ship had already disembarked and passengers left, there were no passengers available at the time to be interviewed."

This would be the only aspect that I would like about going on a cruise. Worst-case scenario you can choose an exit option. Would provide an escape from the thousands of obese Americans alternating between stuffing their faces at the troughs of food and norovirus-induced vomiting.

RIP to him. I feel bad we are discussing the manner of his death. I'm sure his family misses him deeply and would rather contemplate his life.
Really unfortunate. I think my interest in this is just the creepy idea that you could go missing and no one on the cruise particularly does anything.

Yeah, he obviously ended up in the water somehow and died.

I was supposed to board a ship in July of 2018 in Miami but we were severely delayed because one of the crew members jumped trying to attempt suicide. They searched for him for a while and couldn't find him so they brought the people to the port. Then it made the news the next day that a Carnival Ship spotted him and rescued him. He was extremely lucky to not die when he hit the water but to also stay alive and be found almost 48 hours later.
