Falls Church HS

Had a gun brought to school today. Thankfully nobody was hurt. I hope they confiscate the gun and hold the parents accountable.

Not at all surprised and just one of the many reasons that I’m leaving the school environment. Yes, spent a considerable amount of time at Falls Church HS.

Do you have more info to share, OP?
Anonymous
Not OP, but I read another student took a picture of a gun a student had in their waistband and shared it with an adult. They identified the student but the student left before they got to the classroom. FCPD located them in the community and are investigating.

Wow. Please post the note sent out to the parents about this incident.

Hope this student was expelled from this school instantly if they walked into school with a gun.

Dear Fairfax County Public Schools Parents/Guardians and Staff,

Keeping our students and staff safe in schools is a team effort. We must all work together to support and educate our children.

In FCPS, we have built lessons on gun safety into our curriculum. In early grades, students learn what to do if they find a gun (leave it alone, leave the area, and let an adult know). In upper grades, students learn the consequences of gun violence, personal responsibility for gun safety in the community, and alternatives to violence to resolve conflicts. I ask that parents and guardians reinforce this message at home by talking to your children about gun safety as well.

Gun violence continues to impact communities across our nation. According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, there have already been more than 470 mass shootings across the United States this calendar year. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed, including in homes and in public places.

An estimated 4.6 million children in the U.S. live in households with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm. A recent study found that about one in three gun owners store their weapons loaded and unlocked. Virginia law requires gun owners to store firearms where a child is unlikely to gain access. Fairfax County offers free locks for medications and firearms.

Research shows that secure firearm storage is associated with up to an 85% reduction in the risk of self-inflicted and unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens.

For more information on secure firearm storage, please review these resources from the U.S. Department of Justice or see the gun safety and storage resources page on the FCPS website.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe places for our children to learn and grow.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michelle Reid
Superintendent

I believe that gun safety email is a direct reasonable response to the fact that every Falls Church HS student’s life was in danger yesterday when that student walked into school with that gun.

The school and police are reportedly investigating. The fact that we haven’t heard about consequences yet (the day after the incident) doesn’t mean that there won’t be any.

I suspect the letter today was a warning to all parents - if your kid pulls something like this, there will be consequences for them AND YOU if it’s determined that they got the gun from an unsecured household. Perhaps foreshadowing what might be the story here?? Don’t have any insider knowledge, just reading between the lines.

A reasonable interpretation.

§ 18.2-56.2. Allowing access to firearms by children; penalty.
A. It shall be unlawful for any person to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

B. It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to authorize a child under the age of twelve to use a firearm except when the child is under the supervision of an adult. Any person violating this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. For purposes of this subsection, "adult" shall mean a parent, guardian, person standing in loco parentis to the child or a person twenty-one years or over who has the permission of the parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis to supervise the child in the use of a firearm.

Parents could be charged with a federal child neglect crime, AND FCPS could have been sued for 40M by an injured teacher (e.g. a 6yr old incident in Newport News, Virginia)

A student with a long rap sheet was found at our HS with a knife and was not expelled. Reid and the FCPS Board will have a kid's blood on their hands when one of these delinquents stabs or shoots someone having been let off again and again for major offenses.

Drug and weapons possession should be automatic expulsion and evidence should be turned over to the police.

Agree and so should credible threats against staff or other students. Half the time admin refuses to follow up on discipline referrals and that needs to change too.

what high school?

I suspect this student would be swiftly expelled from TJ HS, yet they get to remain at other schools…
