So a lack of delivery wards isn't a problem actually? Because there are over 100 million women in this country. 2 million without a maternity ward in an hour or so drive doesn't seem so bad.
https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/rural-hospitals-closing-maternity-wards-people-seeking-options-103260601 The closures have worsened so-called “maternity care deserts" — counties with no hospitals or birth centers that offer obstetric care and no OB providers. More than two million women of childbearing age live in such areas, the majority of which are rural. |

How would you feel being one of the 2%?
Hospital lady in the article said that they shut down because short staff can't serve patients safely. Now imagine what it's like for patients with 0 staff or facilities! |
| It says 2 million women of child bearing age, so your denominator is significantly lower than 100 million - probably more like 60 million. Also there are plenty of places where the care just isn’t very good. |
| Maternal death rates are sky high in the US and this is one part of the problem |
Well seeing as food deserts are 18% of the population, I think we have big problems. Food scarcity is continuous. Pregnancy and delivery is temporary. |
| That seems pretty awful, actually. How broken is this country that we should consider that okay? |
| OP, what's your angle here? |
Its 2 million people in a country of 330 million. I don't think its that bad of a problem. They're only pregnant for a short period in their lives and can briefly locate on delivery night like that woman did. |
|
Huh? Briefly relocate on delivery night? How would you know when that will be? My sister went into labor at 23 weeks, I did at 38 weeks. That's a huge possible span of time to relocate ( and also stay employed).
2 million people is a lot! |
| This is worse news than hearing about all of those poor fat people living in a food desert! |
|
There are a lot of weirdos on here lately.
What is even the point of this post? |
Oh, you naive person, the poor women living in food deserts are the ones who live in maternity care deserts too. Women Rights are Human Rights!! |
|
There still isn't a maternity care desert - who lives in Idaho and doesn't relocate briefly before delivery?

You don't think it's that bad of a problem because you're bad at both math and basic human empathy. You also seem to not understand the concept of pregnancy at all based on your last sentence. Do you think maternity care is not a real concern because women are "only pregnant for a short period in their lives"? I'm curious to know how old you are, you're looking at this entire phenomenon more like a language learning bot than a person who understands health outcomes. |
Sir, just say you don't understand the difference between maternity care and obstetric care and we call all call the thread closed. This is weirdly hamfisted trolling. Did a Catholic middle school give some kind of "prove Hobbs isn't hurting anybody" writing prompt? |
