Basketball - options for above average player in Northern Va

Anonymous
My 11 yo is planning to try out for county basketball via VYI. He found VYI house basketball too slow and Evoball did not have the playtime he wanted. His coach thinks he has promise but rates his chances of making county poor. Are there other options out there for an intermediate level player?

For county: He should try out for several different county teams. Try Herndon, they are usually desperate for players and play in D3. The larger organizations will sometimes have 3 teams and its not usually difficult to make the third. What's your zip code?

For AAU: there will always be someone who will take your money and sit him on the bench.

We are in 22181 not far from Reston/Herndon.

Try out for McLean select. Not too far from Vienna. They have two teams and are competitive.

Try out for Vienna and McLean and Herndon--Herndon often don't have enough players to field a team so they will take anyone so its a good plan B.

Also, Vienna’s whole team comes from their AAU team so it’s pretty impossible to make that team. There’s like a 50 page thread on this from two years ago. Don’t let it discourage your son if he can’t make that team and just tryout for McLean and Herndon.

I didn't realize vienna had AAU basketball.

Could also look at FPYC and CYA. CYA always has a million teams so he should have a shot at their lowest team. FPYC is not super competitive usually.

Isn’t Mclean Select competitive? And they certainly wouldn’t be looking for a not so great player for their zip code exception.

The bigger organizations have B and sometimes C teams for the same age group.
Each team gets two exceptions. The first team will be hard or impossible to make.
Easy to make the third team even out of zip.

How is Herndon holding tryouts now when they aren't allowed to start tryouts until the first Monday in October?

Almost all of their county players are on the same AAU team. It’s tough to know if the player wouldn’t make the county team because it’s already full or because of the kid’s skill set.
