We found a quaint (i.e no dishwasher) little August rental on Chincoteague with a water/lighthouse view for $600 Sunday-Sunday last year, a different house next door to the playground was about $1100 the year before.
Flying to California with 2 kids (one on lap - never again)to see Gramps, plus a partial week rental near Yosemite, was about $2150 not including food, baby rentals, or car.
I spent a week before the first kid was born hitting three different B&Bs - Rehoboth, and lower Eastern Shore, eating out every night, rooms totalled about $1550.
Can't wait for this spring - want to hit Park City for some skiing and use the daycare services at Deer Park or The Canyons. Figure about $3750 plus ski rentals and lift tickets.

Park city also has a daycare service, but I think they are on hourly basis.

We skied Deer Valley (7 days) last spring and spent about $7k for a family of 4. I think this is rather optimistic.

Youch! I think we could do Switzerland for that much. Thanks for that reality check, I think? Our kids don't ski yet, we fly coach, we'd rent a 2BR condo instead of a house, and cook at home part of the time. I'm guessing you rented a larger place, ate out a lot, everybody skied?
Re: Deer Valley - we ski there every year (no kids yet) and the daycare costs as much as a lift ticket (maybe a little more), so you are talking at least $400 a day for a family of 4 whether or not you all ski or not. Then add in rentals, condo/house fee, food, flights, etc. $3750 for a week would be a very conservative estimate for a family of four, the modest condos we have rented that have 2 bedrooms can run you 400-500/night as well! You basically hemorrhage money in Park City, but it is an awesome place to go!!
New Hampshire and other parts of New England have OUTSTANDING cabin arrangements (2-3 BRs, K, FR)- right on the water!
The kids (all ages) get to play at their own camp all day, and the parents get to attend happy hour, etc. You don't have to leave all week if you don't want to.
There are campfires available at each cabin (smores!), or an enormous central cabin for meals and adult mixers if you choose.
Totally casual, but fun and well worth the trip. The water sports are great, too. It really is a "cost/benefit no brainer". Plus you get to see New England and all of its beauty. It is not nearly as stifling as traveling south in the dead of summer. I am daydreaming right now.....

Everybody skied, we rented a 1 bdrm condo, we never ate out, and we own our own ski gear, and we flew coach. Deer Valley is not for the faint-of-wallet.
And for the record, we ski Switzerland--don't even think about it, you can't touch that for that kind of $$$....maybe through a ski club, but not any other way. I'm German and use German speaking websites (cheaper, since they assume you're in Europe), and it still costs a lot.
You might be able to do Deer Valley for less, we did stay in a very nice location. But it's very expensive, and it did include ski school for both boys, which was great--private lessons for our 3 yr old, the only way he could ski. Semi-private for the 9 yr old who is a double black diamond skier. So maybe, but good luck, it's pricey. Daycare is not cheap there, but fantastic service and very well run. Always rated #1 in customer service, and it comes with a price tag for sure.
