Applying to TJ and expunging a grade

Anonymous
DC got a B+ in H Algebra I last year (As in other core classes) and is taking H Geometry now in 8th grade. We are thinking of expunging the grade. Will this affect eligibility to apply to TJ?

Maybe you should get a different kid. Start fresh.

No thank you. I like the one I have.

No, of course not.

Probably won't affect ability to apply, but it would be a huge red flag in the admissions process.

A B+ in Algebra is nothing to be ashamed of.

NP. Do you mean that expunging a grade is on record and may suggest a worse grade vs leaving the B+?

Also, how would one expunge a non-failing grade? What kind of sob story would you have to come up with to explain a B+ that might affect one's TJ odds? I think you'd have better luck with a D.

Expunging a HS class grade from a MS transcript is pretty easy, or so I have been told. You have to request it within a certain time frame. You cannot do it after the child has left MS. A friend had her child's C in Spanish 1 expunged from his transcript and he retook it in HS. I do know someone who tried to have the Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade expunged but they waited until the child had started HS and were not able to do so.

I would think that an expunged grade for Algebra would make it hard to apply to TJ. You have to have completed 2 honors math classes to apply. I am not sure how an expunged honors class would work in that situation.

OP, please if your child is getting a B+ in Algebra, then please don't try to send your kid to TJ. It's going to be much harder math. If you need to, find a good private school instead.

If they're struggling in H Algebra, TJ may not be a good fit for them.

Yeah, it would be expunged for their gpa but wouldn’t it also be expunged so TJ couldn’t see it either?

Is your child interested in TJ or are you?

Please listen to this poster! Good candidates for TJ sail through algebra, often in earlier grades if they are allowed.

These posters are attempting to reduce competition, likely for their own kids or community members. Don’t listen to them.

TJ is a STEM school, not a math school. Many TJ students take Geometry in 9th.

A Biology student with a B+ in Honors Algebra in 7th is fine.

No, we are not. OP, go ahead then and see what happens to your child in the very unlikely event they get in. Set up children for success and high self esteem not the prestige of TJ.

Not "many". Unless it's drastically changed since admission standards shifted, they used to make you double up freshman year to catch up.
