Should graveyards be developed and future ones banned?

Seriously, why do we waste so much land on the dead? It is valuable space that could be used for housing, especially in and around metropolitan areas. There dead people, people. Isn't it time we think about using the land for housing and banning future burial plots? They're also terrible for the environment because they use huge amounts of water to keep green, tons of pesticides to keep out weeds, and are generally devoid of plant life to support ecosystems. Just creamate people, what the problem? We are running out of space to bury dead people, so why should we make the living suffer?

Yep, time to start making Solent Green to feed the populace.

Yes.

That isn’t going to happen. People have a lot of religious beliefs about burying the body whole. We need to adopt the practices of the East. They wrap the body in white cloth, and drop it in a hole.

I don't think existing graveyards should be undone and developed, but we certainly need a better solution going forward.

We have nearly endless quantities of land in North America. No, I'm not concerned about cemeteries. Rock Creek Park is how big? Most of it is useless.

+1

OP sounds like someone who has never taken a road trip anywhere and has no idea how vast our country is.

OP, are you talking about building housing developments on burial sites, like in the movie “Poltergeist”?

Or are you saying we shouldn’t devote any more land to cemetaries?

I think they want us to create a tourist attraction like the catacombs in Paris and dig up all the dead people and pile their bones in funny shapes.

Land accessible to developed cities and infrastructure is NOT unlimited. We need more dense areas, more town-centric, etc. Its ridiculous how much land they take up. Same with churches and their living rent-free/tax-free/audit-free. Yes, they should be banned. Its all poppy-cock. Processing of bodies through embalming is also a horrendous practice.

Very immense graveyard across the river in Arlington, OP. Too bad you can’t touch that and the heroes buried there.

Churches are vital parts of a community that provide conference rooms and meeting spaces for all sorts of community and civic groups. They don't just take up space but provide hosting places otherwise unavailable to people.

Because private property is a thing.

Yuck OP.

I do think we need to re-evaluate our beliefs about our corpses, but leave the dead alone.

It’s been done before. It just cost a lot to do.

“ Before moving them, developers must generally try to find any descendants and consult them. They must pay all costs of a move, and approval is required from the county or city. Developers say that deciding whether to move graves depends on the number, their location and the value of the property, among other factors”
