Republicans Handing Out LIES at BTSN

Anonymous
At both back to school nights I’ve gone to, there were reps from both parties handing out literature. I took it from everyone since this is the first school board election I’ll vote in since moving to Fairfax. The Republican literature was just lies about local school testing scores. I checked the actual scores and not a single data point from their piece of paper was accurate.

I get it if they want to say that FCPS has gone downhill, that’s fine, but they need to be accurate in the numbers instead of making them up. I know who I will NOT be voting for.

Same experience. I went to the link in the source and it was test scores from 2020-2021 which they said were for 2023.

I don't think trashing our kid's schools at a back to school night is an effective electoral strategy.

So post the material/link.

OP. For example, the paper said math proficiency rate in 2023 at Fairhill ES was 67%. It is 82%. The website used as the source said it was 65-69% for 2020-21. They are using outdated numbers and lying to us about it.

I went to two BTSNs this week and both nights, just said "No, thank you" and walked right past everyone handing out flyers (I might have said no thank you to someone handing an actual school related flyer, oops). I'm tired of this bullshit and tired of people showing up at every school event with their political flyers - I don't care what party they belong to, I don't want to see them at my kid's school when I'm there doing something not at all politically related. They shouldn't be allowed.

I agree. Not sure there is anything to be done since it's 1st amendment-protected activity. Both parties should just come to a consensus not to do it. It's not like it really has an impact and it's a waste of the candidate's time and money.

I am always nice when I see volunteers for the parties at farmers markets, festivals, and even knocking on my door. They all really do have good intentions and are trying to promote understanding of our local policies. But back to school nights are already hectic enough without being pestered when you enter AND leave.

MCPS parent here--I've never seen political handouts at BTSN! That's a thing?? How odd. Why do schools allow this?

It’s a community event. I’ve been in FCPS for 25 years as a teacher. There have always been school board candidates at Back to School Night handing out literature. It’s not odd.

There are school board seats up for election this fall. Typically, any political activity at BTSN is related to the school board, not more general elections. It does make sense, since public school parents are their constituents who are most invested in the outcome of the election.

Ahhh....the republican way.

NP. I looked at the flyers I received from both R and D. All the facts were correct on these flyers and the R focus on excellence was more specific than the D general goals.

Just because it was more specific doesn’t mean they’ll actually be able to do it.

You fact checked them? Examples?

The latest SOL SCORES should reflect years 2022-2023. Do you have any idea when did they release them to the public? SAT and ACT are on going to reflect the gain (or loss) for the past academic year. If a flyer reflects outdated data, what makes you think it was used intentionally with the purpose of lying? Parents who have children in FCPS don’t need a flyer to tell them how well (or not) their kids did. The fact that many parents are outsourcing tutors to help their children level to the required standards, particularly in math and English, is a good indicator of how FCPS did last year, or the previous year.

Democrat candidates to the School Board have greater donations than their opponents endorsed by the GOP, and therefore more resources to print out updated flyers and campaign for their candidates. In fact, you might have also noticed that at BTSN there were many DEM volunteers and even some candidates present distributing flyers and greeting people. What school where you at when you were handed those flyers? Because at McLean HS, I got approached multiple times by DEM volunteers, but didn’t see anyone from the candidates endorsed by the GOP, nor a single volunteer, not even a flyer.
