What textbooks do you use to your middle school kid can study and learn Science and Social Studies?

Hi! Middle school science teacher here - we use CK-12 for our textbook. It’s free for anyone’s use and is NGSS-aligned.
They offer other subjects but I am not well versed enough to know how thorough they are. I am very pleased with what they offer for science for introductions and reinforcement of concepts taught in class. https://www.ck12.org/teacher/ |

Why is there no textbook for MS science?
For 6th grade, DD's teacher is not very good at teaching and a textbook would be oh so helpful. Suggestions of a resource that follows what is being taught in 6th grade? |
MCPS prefers to spend money on other things because textbooks are not important. |
Like $10M settlements for creating locker room rape culture. |
New curricula this year so with any luck they will donate "obsolete" textbooks to parents. |
| I didn't realize it was a new curriculum this year for MS science. Regardless if it is new or not, a textbook to reference back to just seems like a basic need for teaching a bunch of new concepts. And the slides on canvas don't do any teaching either. I'm so glad they have math textbooks finally....Science really needs book too. And DD's teacher refuses to answer any student questions during class. :/ |
Agree that textbooks are a necessity, but MCPS does not believe that to be the case. MCPS would rather have kids Google random websites to search for answers. My kid found that incredibly frustrating in MS Science, except for the one year she had a teacher who would basically spoon-feed them the answers. I recognize that's not ideal, but honestly, I found it a better approach than sending kids off to search for answers on the internet. The lack of a Spanish textbook also irritates me. It's just a constant flow of ridiculous MCPS photocopies worksheets. For the amount of money they spend on making photocopies, they could probably cut a deal with a textbook publisher and at least get some workbooks for all the kids. |
