Since when is Thurs Night Football a thing?

Anonymous
My DC is a freshman and just texted and wanted to go to a football game on Thurs night. But they have school the next day. I thought games were on Fri or Sat? Why have games on school nights? They have 2 tests the next day so I am probably going to say no.

Friday night begins Rosh Hashanah so they moved the games to Thursday for this week.

Incorrect

There are many weeks of football on Thursday night this year

And a minority holiday shouldn't cancel football. That is weird LOL

It's not a "minority" at Wootton.

It's not incorrect it is due to the holiday. There are NO high school games this Friday for Football, Soccer, Field Hockey, Girls Volleyball, etc. This is also the only scheduled global MCPS Thursday Football game this season.

You are being incredibly culturally insensitive. It is one of the two most religious holidays of the year for those who observe and school would be closed if it fell on a weekday (holiday starts Friday night into Saturday). I appreciate that MCPS has adjusted to accommodate the many families who do observe.

Blair had a game last Thursday and my kid said it was because there was a shortage of ref’s - not enough to cover all of the Friday games.

Probably due to availability of referees. Many sports are having trouble finding officials even before COVID. After COVID some games were cancelled because there weren't enough refs to go around, so they started spreading out schedules to accommodate the lower number of refs.

Having said that, if you're talking freshman or JV football, those can be different days from varsity. YMMV.

Wootton has over 50% Jewish kids? I thought it was more Asian and WASPY

So Wootton has 3, QO has just this one, Sherwood and Churchill have a couple, BUT this is the only Friday when no one has a Friday game. The other Thursday games are happenstance. No other sports have games or matches either on this Friday It is about the holiday! Also, no need for name calling. While you are entitled to your mistaken opinion that this has nothing to do with a holiday when clearly every school in MCPS has no games on the evening Rosh Hashanah begins, keep it respectful! Thanks!

JV games seem to be on some Thursdays fwiw.

https://mocoshow.com/blog/2023-mcps-high-school-football-schedule/ says (without source) "Note: Week 3 games will all be played on Thursday night due to religious holiday that weekend."

That doesn't explain the other Thursday games, though.

from 2022, after a brawl then mentions "Tier two could also involve changing the time of a game to earlier in the day on a Friday, or moving it to a Thursday night or Saturday"

Or just cancel the football game, problem solved.
