Is ice cream safe to eat if it’s refrozen?

We bought a half gallon of Breyer’s yesterday and when we got home, I asked child to put it in the garage freezer. Child spaced out and put it in garage refrigerator instead. I found it 8 hours later and moved it to the freezer. It’s still unopened and was never at room temperature, but I’d rather toss it than make anyone sick…but I don’t know if I’m being overly paranoid. Give it to me straight.

It’s fine. It may not taste great and the texture may be off but it’s fine.

It’s just cream and sugar mostly, so no harm. The difference between ice cream and cream and sugar is that ice cream has trapped air. Once it melts, those air pockets disappear, so that’s why refrozen ice cream has a different texture.

It might be gross, but it’s definitely not dangerous.

Probably safe, but not worth it since it will be freezer burned and gross anyway

Yes it’s safe, but texture will change. Taste it & see if you like it!

It’s perfectly safe. Toss it in the blender and make milkshakes!

It’s safe but the texture will be off and there may be ice crystals. The air used to make it light is deflated. Make milkshakes.

maybe use for milkshake. the texture will be crystally.

Cream out for more than two hours at room temperature risks growing mold and bacteria. Refreeezing at normal freezer temperatures will not kill those. So no, it is not clearly safe. It would be safe after an hour or two, but MAY NOT BE after EIGHT HOURS. Like any other food! When they say that fish or certain foods are flash frozen to kill bacteria, it is a MUCH lower temperature than what your freezer is set at. Your freezer does not kill anything that may have grown during those eight hours. It merely delays growth of further bacteria/mold

The OP said the ice cream was put in *refrigerator not *room temperature.

I agree if it was left out on the counter, then not safe.

(Would still toss in this case since it will be freezer burned and taste gross)

It'll be safe but disgusting. I'd toss.

Thanks everyone. I don’t like ice cream, so I won’t be tasting it. Since it’s not unsafe, I’ll let the kids throw it out if they find it unappetizing.

No ice cream is one of the top 5 things that cause food poisoning.

Yeah a vendor tried to give us a melted and then refrozen ice cream desert (it was in sealed bag) and I told spouse heck no, you don’t know how long it was at room temp.

In OP case, that would be never so milkshakes all day.

OP. You don’t like ICE CREAM?? elaborate? Lactose intolerance? Grew up in Arctic?
