abbreviated schedule

Anonymous
Hi, my child is taking two classes this year at MC through dual enrollment, requested an abbreviated schedule, and was denied because "abbreviated schedules are for seniors." (They're not a senior)

I don't see this policy anywhere in MCPS regs or on the school's website. Can anyone shed any light here?

We'd like to appeal the decision but want to be clear on what the rules actually are before we do.

Thank you so much

True, the regulation just refers to "secondary students":

How would they do dual enrollment at MC without an abbreviated schedule? I'm confused.

Is this just someone confused about paperwork and wording?
Abbreviated schedule is maybe for someone taking less than seven classes, due do something like illness.

If you are doing dual enrollment at the college, not out of high school, you aren't taking fewer classes, You're taking them at different time and /or place, so of course you should take fewer than seven classes at school.

*not AT the high school.

The bureaucracy just kills me sometimes

My sophomore is taking a dual enrollment class at MC. When they first asked, the school said no, it's only for juniors and seniors.

This is false, but since admin only had experience with juniors and seniors taking DE classes, they reasoned backwards that was the rule. Sigh.

The school eventually saw the light, but it was a real unnecessary PITA before they did.

Did you register in dual enrollment through the high school? If so, then your student's counselor should have accounted for that as part of their schedule. If you take 1 class at MC, then you take 5 classes at HS. 2 classes at MC and you typically take 4 classes at HS. Your counselor should be coordinating with your student to ensure that they are taking classes that meet HS graduation requirements and that the credits transfer back to MCPS.

If you registered separately with MC first, you need to contact your HS Dual Enrollment Program Assistant (DEPA). List here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QHl_Ur9jCXYlW327fEI_zwy2vEYDysmacN5OvMI6AmM/edit

If you actually did register in dual enrollment through the school, then whoever is saying you can't abbreviate your schedule is just confused. A lot has changed with dual enrollment over the past 5 years and they are out of the loop.

Registered DE through the school in close consultation with the DE coordinator. Guidance counselor filled out the form requesting PT schedule together with my kid -- and the assistant principal denied the request. SMH

this is really annoying. this is not a kid trying to do less school. this is a kid with multiple AP classes AND a college class who doesn't want to take an academic "elective" to kill time and fill a slot.

If MCPS doesn't have a rule restricting abbreviated schedules to seniors, would a HS be allowed to make that a rule anyway?

so frustrating...!

The AP is wrong. MCPS and MC partnership has gotten closer with more opportunities (they just added virtual options.) There’s no policy saying it’s only for juniors or seniors. If you look at the list of class equivalents, some are clear freshman or sophomore classes.

Ask the AP what the concern is and cc the principal. There probably needs to be a clear transportation plan since younger than 16 1/2 can’t drive themselves yet. If they still don’t budge, email Karla Silvestre on BOE and whoever you can find in central office who is over the program. Karla is on a board of MC and has been very involved in expanding opportunities at MC. Also email SMOB. He can advocate.

If he didn’t take the elective would he still fill total number of credits required for graduation as well as “requirements” that are usually filled by “electives” such as PE, Art, tech, health, etc.? Maybe the AP is denying the abbreviated schedule because he needs some elective credit?

You actually have to have 2.5 elective credits outside of core. & required classes to graduate.
