| DCPS just sent out an email announcing indoor recess and PE through Thursday. Does anyone know if after school sports will be cancelled as well? |
| If it’s too hot for PE and recess it’s too hot for sports |
| FYI, SJC informed parents they were canceling sports through Thursday due to the heat...and they love their sports. |
| This is stupid. |
| We got a call and email from Wells that practices are canceled. Grumble, grumble. |
| Yes our kid at Walls just texted to say they were coming home on the bus because their practice was cancelled due to the heat. |
Really? When did we enter a world in which common sense, short term safety restrictions are considered a problem? The heat index is around 100 degrees right now. |
Small children are not going to be injured by playing outside for a short recess in 100 degree heat. Get a grip. |
Disagree, and I normally complain when they keep the kids inside. It was already uncomfortably hot at 8am this morning, and when I picked my kid up and walked the half-mile home, I was uncomfortable by the time I got back inside. If this were a Saturday, I'd be looking for indoor activities or plan on spending a couple hours at the pool while keeping a close eye on hydration. I don't think there is much to be gained from sending kids out in this particular heat. Now, when they keep kids inside because of a little rain or the temp dips down to 31 degrees (quelle horreur!), I get annoyed. But it's gross out this week. |
They’re kids. They don’t care if they’re hot. And exercise is important. |
You can exercise inside, I do it every day. And the fact that kids don't care if they are hot is precisely the problem. Exercising in high heat and humidity can cause dehydration and heat stroke. Kids won't pay attention to this at all and won't drink water or tell a teacher if they are getting a headache or feeling strange. It's one thing for a parent or guardian to take their own kids out in this heat, where you can make sure they hydrate and watch them for signs of an issue. It's something else for teachers to take 20 kids outside and then make sure they all drink enough water and monitor them for signs of heat stroke for the rest of the day. Heat can actually be dangerous. |
You are crazy. There are actual real things to worry about in this city. Crazy drivers. Shootings. Etc. Kids playing outside for 20 min when it’s hot? Nah … |
| My kids had recess today. They ok. |
I mean, you could say the same about complaining about indoor recess. Like maybe just let it go? I doubt teachers on recess duty want to stand on the 1000 degree blacktop in their business casual either. I swear people will complain about anything DCPS does. |
It's not about if they care or not. It's incredibly dangerous. When I was in high school, an 11 year old died during baseball practice due to excessive heat and dehydration. It happens and it should not be taken lightly |
