My son and his best friend are both fairly unathletic. They are 12. As tweens, I think they would benefit from a structure dactivity with other kids. But they hate competition and we hate DC achievement culture. Any suggestions for more laidback activities that they could do that would be structured but not necessarily competitive?
BFF is non binary so they would also need to be inclusive activities. |
| Rock climbing? |
| My son and his friends played roller hockey in the street a lot, they also played basketball in people's driveways. He was also in band, and student government. |
| Cant they participate in activities like this at school? Choir, band, theater, theater production etc. I wouldn't say they are "laid back" - they require hard work and commitment but everything doesn't have to be centered around sports. |

Could they do an inline skating program?
Would they enjoy working to clean green space? A Chess club? |
| If you want to go in arts direction, filmmaking classes are great for tweens. Imagination Stage has a series of classes that start at age 11 and go through HS. |
You hate the "DC achievement culture"? What city is more welcoming to boys who can't throw a baseball? Is he going to look for a non-competive job when he graduates? |
| Rock climbing, orchestra (not too late to pick up a brass instrument), ultimate frisbee, D and D or Magic the Gathering |
These are great ideas! Where would I find them? We are on NW DC. |

If you want something with physical activity, try parkour.
Also Labyrinth in DC has gaming groups for kids that age. |
BFF's legal guardian(s) can find non-athletic activities for their/zir child. Ask your son what he would like to do and organize around his interests. Then when you set something up for your son you can extend an invitation to his friend. Archery, rock-climbing, pottery, programming, volunteering at a shelter or soup kitchen, local gov't internship, animal shelter volunteer, scouts? |
| Dungeons and Dragons groups |
| Hiking, biking, kyaking, and fishing all great great things my 13 year old does in DC, VA, MD. |
| Scouts. |
| Cooking class? |
