Too many things for one backpack

Anonymous
High school teachers are unrealistic. The kids do not get lockers. They have to carry a lunch, water bottle, and backpack.

3 teachers asked for 1.5” binders and notebooks. Math wants graphing calculator, graph notebook and a 0.5 binder. 2 other classes are notebooks and folders. Tech class is 1” binder with lined paper. That is in addition to a Chromebook.

How do high schoolers do it without a locker?

That is a bit absurd. Ours asked for a mix of composition and spiral and folders. Do they need a graphing calculator at school? Our school has a classroom set so kids need one at home but not school.

My kid has all of that plus a huge AP Gov textbook and an instrument. We are wondering the same thing. He said kids are lugging everything around all day long. Everything doesn’t fit in one backpack so he moved a Chromebook, calculator and lunch in another smaller backpack.

No. The teachers don't get to demand anything if they're not the ones lugging stuff around. High schoolers pick what they want, and the teachers deal with it. My son had a large binder with tabs, and loose paper for every subject. When it got too full, he'd leave stuff at home. No notebooks.

We didn't get an AP gov textbook. Can you leave the instrument at school? Our kid got a small locker in the band room. We just have two sets of instruments for school. We clip the lunch box to the backpack. I hate the MCPS chromebooks. They aren't bad but they are much heavier than others.

My kid is at Wootton. They have a AP Gov textbook.

HS’ers figure it out. They use 1-5 subject spiral notebooks, or 1 binder w/ tabs and several folders, or some other system. They find a teacher’s room to leave things in. Band rooms have cubbies for instruments. They attach lunch boxes to backpacks. Share lockers. Etc etc. They figure it out.

Me again. My son was at Walter Johnson. He had textbooks he insisted on bringing to school (math, not history), which made his large backpack really heavy, but it could all fit.

However no teacher ever demanded a certain organizational system. None of them ever collected notebooks, so why on earth would they insist on kids having one? There were worksheets to be handed in in AP Calc BC, but most assignments were done online. He took notes on loose paper and kept it all in one binder.

Are you serious? There are no lockers in HS? Why? I’m a transplant and have never heard of such a thing.

There are lockers, but the kids don't use them. The classes are all over the building, and the lockers are always far away. No time to get there and get to class on time

I had no lockers at my high school in the late 90s. We all just had the giant LL Bean backpacks stuffed with textbooks.

Our math teacher has a set of math books at school and suggested we buy one for at home or we can use the online version. It was an older book so not crazy expensive used.

Our school offers them to some kids and the rest have to apply to ask for them.

Maybe because it's a W school. We didn't get one or maybe its coming.

I don’t get this either. What about winter jackets and sports equipment.
