| Our current 8th grader would like to make NJHS. When will they find out if they qualified? Have people already been notified? How does the notice come? Letter? Email? To the kid directly? |
They already sent the notifications last spring and had the induction ceremony shortly after. |
|
Some schools invite members at the end of 7th, some schools do it at the beginning of 8th. The school I work at invites members in at the beginning of 8th because of our mobility rates. We want to capture as many eligible kids in our school as we can.
We'll get going the first week of September. |
That makes sense. |
| What are the requirements? |
For our MS it was a 3.75 gpa |
|
How is GPA calculated? If you have straight As and a B-. Does it matter what course the B is in?
And how do the kiddos get notified? |
| Hopefully ours does it at the beginning of 8th. I didn't see anything from last year. |
| Do all middle schools in FCPS do njhs? What does it entail? |
Not sure if all do it. I think there is some community service hours involved and they also had to write some kind of essay. |
| How are students notified? And when? |
| Ours notified kids in fourth quarter of 7th. |

I am a NJHS sponsor. I get a list of eligible students (GPA from Grade 7, has to have a GPA of 3.whatever to be eligible). We send out invitations through Advisory. We do an interest meeting, also through Advisory. Applications are open for about 10 days. We have our opening meeting usually in the 3rd week of Sept, to "induct". Students have to maintain grades and have no behavior issues through the end of May to be pinned the first week of June. Students are required to log X amount of service hours. We offer many opportunities to do so through the school, and they can find opportunities on their own.
If a student's grades drop, then they are put on probation for a quarter, if the grades are not back up over the cut-off, they are dismissed. If they do not do or log their service hours, they are not pinned in June. Students can also be dismissed for behavior infractions, and there is an appeal process. If a student is inducted at our school and then moves, we reach out to the receiving school to see if a) they have a chapter, and b) if they do, we send their records of membership so that they can join their new local chapter. I've been a sponsor on and off for 20 years and at some schools NJHS has 250 members. Some schools have 75. I am proud that we run ours like a true co-curricular org (e.g. meetings during the school day, lots of service opportunities at school), so as many kids as possible can participate. |
| When do MS notify kids? Mine had all As last year and we haven't heard. Have notices gone out? |
| It’s October and they don’t even have a sponsor for the NJHS yet at my kid’s middle school. No meetings have been set up and no further information have been provided. Lame!!!! |
