I started a diet to lose 15 pounds and my go to diet is usually heavy on vegetables. All of a sudden as a 30 something I can’t eat broccoli, kale, cabbage, spinach etc. all the green stuff. It basically gives me the whole pepto bismal jingle when I could eat them in the past without any issue. It’s been so bad I’ve been courteous enough to my DH to sleep in another bedroom to avoid making the whole main bedroom smell like a rotten egg farm. What do you take if you can’t digest greens but want to? |
Beano just before eating helps stop gas. |
It sounds like you increased fiber too quickly. You may need to work up to that amount of veggies. It's the fiber increase that is most likely causing this. |
Gas x |
All those foods are bursting with gut-improving prebiotics (fiber, basically). But you need to also make sure you’re seeding your gut with the bacteria that will help break them down. Add in additional portions of fermented stuff like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, etc.
If you haven’t eaten any of those foods in a while, your gut flora doesn’t have the population to deal with them. That’s why regularity and variety in fruit/veg consumption are both so important. |
That’s a lot of antinutrients and oxalates. |
Sounds like a silly and unhealthy "diet". But that's not your question. You've introduced too much fiber too quickly. |
I recommend getting an enzyme digestion supplement. They work like beano for beans but have a wider range of enzymes. I use Wholezyme from Whole Foods - it helps a lot with easier digestion and less stomach upset and gas. |
This happened to me too. All of a sudden I couldn't eat broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, brussel sprouts, asparagus. I've done a ton of research and all I can figure out is that I have a fodmap intolerance. Really sucks, because I've just had to eliminate them entirely from my diet. |
I would not eat then for a few weeks and start taking probiotics. Then see if you can gradually re-introduce them. Maybe one at a time to see whether some are more intolerable than others. |
Or don’t reintroduce them |
Sounds like you’re eating too much too fast. Back off a bit. Are you cooking them? If not, do so — it helps.
I like Skaklee’s EZ Gest for digestion woes like this. May help your situation. |
Sure, but personally I would try again. I have had lots of stomach issues and what I can and cannot eat changes over time. |
I eat blues and yellows to let them become green once they're in. ![]() |
Always your choice. Perhaps the stomach issues are because of those greens |
