Starts on a Thursday … why is it 3 days shorter ? How come it isn’t starting on the 18th to make the holidays 2 full weeks as usual? |
Because when they provided multiple calendar options this one won. You can’t have a full 2 week winter break without losing other holidays elsewhere or going later into the summer. |
NP. Except we are going later in the summer this school year. Summer break will start nearly a week later than it did last school year. So, that doesn't account for a shorter winter break. There's lots of single days off during the school year. |
Yes, because it’s an inclusive calendar that also factors in Jewish, Hindu and Muslim holidays, which it previously did not. Again, it’s not fair to say that Muslim kids need to either come to school or miss content for Eid when Christian parents would never accept that for Christmas Eve or Christmas day. So the calendar has to be balanced with those holidays, federal holidays where they must be closed, and contracted teacher work days. |
Christmas IS a federal holiday. |
So are you just going to be obtuse then? They have to include federal holidays and other religious holidays and contracted teacher work days. That’s why the schedule is what it is. Live with it. |
Are you referring to Christmas vacation? |
What’s your damage, Heather? Your statement was that Christians wouldn’t stand for having school on Christmas. There would not be school on Christmas anyway because it’s a federal holiday. It’s not that wE’rE caTerINg to ChRistiAns aNd it’S noT fAir!! |
True, it is Christmas vacation. I will always call it that. ![]() |
Literally everyone does. |
OP here
I just used “Winter Break “ because that’s what LCPS has it listed as. Actually that too has changed, it used to be called Christmas Vacation. |
I appreciate they inclusive religious holidays, but I do wish we would attend on federal holidays whenever possible (in other states, it varies whether schools are open/closed for Indigenous Peoples Day and Veterans Day, for example). As an ES teacher, I hate that only about HALF of the instructional weeks this year are full 5-day weeks. It's such a disruption for a lot of students. I'd rather use those days to teach about the federal holiday and keep students in their routines. |
We are closed for Columbus Day but go on Veterans’ Day (which I don’t mind since we use it for a big ceremony honoring and recognizing veterans.) |
Yes, but it has been an inclusive calendar at least the last 2 years that my child has attended LCPS, and we still had a full 2 weeks for winter break, plus we weren’t in school until mid-June. This isn’t the first year that Hindu, Jewish, and Muslim holidays were observed. |
LCPS is open for Veterans day . We stopped having that off years ago. I hear you on the lack of 5 day weeks but they have to make room for everyone’s holidays and they just pop up that way, especially in the fall |
