No math senior year?

If DD took Algebra 1 in 8th, Honors Geography in 9th, Honors Algebra 2 in 10th, and Honors Precalculus in 11th, does she need another math in 12th? Does the math in 8th count toward her 4 years of HS credits? Will colleges that require 4 years of math (UMD) dismiss a kid who doesn’t take math in 12th?

She hates math.

Can she take statistics?

You have to take for years of math IN HIGH SCHOOL to graduate. So no, 8th grade doesn’t count. If high school classes in middle school counted, some would stop taking math after freshman year.

MCPS forces everyone to take a math every year and it honestly sucks. My DD is taking Alg 2 in 9th and has no desire to keep leaning Calculus she will never use another minute in her life. It would be different if she was going for science/engineering/computers/med, etc... but she isn't. The math options suck and to force the kids to keep taking it instead of other more interesting courses stink.

That’s honestly stupid. When I was in high school, it was 3 years of math. I took one semester of AP stats senior year and dropped it when I got into college early. Replaced it with a Hemingway short stories elective and was so much happier.

It's not MCPS, it's a state requirement.

My son is on the same math pathway. He hates math. Due to a disabilty, he has to work a lot harder than most, even with tutors. He dreads precalc. He won’t ever use it as he is a social science kid. There’s no way he will take calc. We’ve already decided he will take stats senior year as at least it will be useful.

You could do AP stats or AP computer science to satisfy the requirement senior year.

I needed stats and calc for my social science degree (masters in public policy). If he sticks with social sciences, he could very well need the math.

The same idiots that brought us the MCAP. Take your Britishism final exams and stuff them. Total hookup to testing industry yet again

This thread is exactly what parents of younger students need to see when they’re forcing their child in advanced math classes!

She can take lower-level basic calculus, 2-Year Algebra 2, Statistics, or Computer Science, or retake Geometry, instead of full Calculus BC
(but senior year Computer Science will harm admission to to a UMd school)
