We'd like to name our baby with the name pronouced "lie-lah" but can't decide on spelling - which would you prefer?
Lyla Lilah Laila I like Laila the best but it could be mispronouced as "lay-lah." |
| I like Lila or Lilah. If I saw Laila, I would think it was pronounced lay-la. |
| Laila would definitely be pronounced "lay-lah" by most people - you'd constantly be correcting them. If I had to choose, I prefer Lyla over Lilah, but I'm not a fan of either spelling. What about Lila? |

Lilah
First, I think it’s prettier (reminds me a little of lilac). More importantly, the others will be a hassle for her. She’ll have to spell them each time. In the case of Laila she’ll have to explain the pronunciation. People will still probably change it to the version that seems right to them. I have an unusual name and no matter how carefully I spell it and try to make it as clear as possible, it always gets mangled and has caused a lot of confusion over the years. |
| I would choose Lyla to keep it simple to spell and avoid mispronunciation. It's a pretty name, OP! |
|
Garrity.
But maybe enough time has passed? |
| Lila |
|
Lila
Still might be mispronounced as lee la |
| A friend of mine is named Lila and says people mispronounce / misread it all the time. She gets Lily, Layla, Lilia, etc. |
|
Laila will be assumed as LAY-lah.
I know two Lylas both pronounced LIE-lah, three Lilahs all pronouced LIE-lah, and two Lailas both pronounced LAY-lah. |
| On my DDs soccer team there are two Lila’s. |
| I would say Lilah (or even Lila). Lyla just looks misspelled to me and I would pronounce Laila as Lay-la. |
| I like Lyla and I think it would be pronounced right the most. |
Interesting. Maybe it’s gaining in popularity, which would be a huge plus for OP. |
| I like Lila for that pronunciation |
