Jackson Reed using covid-era block schedule again?

Anonymous
I had not heard they were going back to this. Schedules posted (which I know will change) indicate only four periods per day with a Friday switch.

They may have done this during covid, but it's not a "covid schedule". It's got many advantages. Most of the private schools use it. I grew up in Canada and that's how we did it even many years ago.

My high school in MD had block scheduling in the 90s.

During covid, they used 4x4 block schedule, meaning four classes per semester. That sucked.

Last year they switched back to A/B block schedule, which means classes for the full year but every other day for 80 minutes. That’s what they’re using again this year.

To further clarify, in A/B block schedule, you have four classes M/W (A day) and four classes T/Th (B day), then Fridays alternate between A days and B days.

The 4x4 covid-era schedule was the same four classes every day for one semester, than another four classes every day second semester. It is very compressed/intense and magnifies the impact of a student or teacher missing a week of school for illness. It’s also terrible for AP classes.

Jackson-Reed is on it's normal schedule - full year with A & B days so only 4 classes a day. Fridays alternate between A & B days.

Yes, Jackson-Reed is back to the pre-COVID A/B block schedule...this is the same as last year and the same. There were two years (the remote year and the 2021-2022 school year) that they went with a 4x4 semester schedule- it was mandated by DCPS. DCPS wanted that mandate to continue but parents/students/teachers fought back and eventually DCPS allowed high schools to use the schedules that worked best for their teachers/student populations.

Same— MCPS in the early 2000s.

The 4x4 semester block schedule was awful for so many reasons, not the least of which was that students could go a whole year with not having math or language (e.g., if they had math in the fall semester of one year and not until the spring semester of the following year). There are a lot of school systems doing this and it makes no sense (think about all the evidence of learning loss over the summer and then explain how this is not 10x worse when kids go a whole year without a core subject!!!!)....in any event, it is very good that J-R is back to its old schedule of year-long classes for all non-electives.

to be clear, J-R is back to it's pre-COVID A/B schedule, which is NOT the terrible 4x4 semester schedule. Many DCPS high schools have stuck with it...it's quite possible tht MacArthur has opted to placate DCPS and go with the 4x4...in which case I'd pull my kid immediately if that were an option.

ALL classes were one semester for those two years, including languages. Thankfully, J-R has reverted back to its old schedule but many DCPS high schools are still doing the 4x4.

My rising 9th grader does not have language on her schedule, even though she she selected one. does this mean she might begin foreign language next semester?
