During covid, they used 4x4 block schedule, meaning four classes per semester. That sucked. Last year they switched back to A/B block schedule, which means classes for the full year but every other day for 80 minutes. That’s what they’re using again this year.
To further clarify, in A/B block schedule, you have four classes M/W (A day) and four classes T/Th (B day), then Fridays alternate between A days and B days. The 4x4 covid-era schedule was the same four classes every day for one semester, than another four classes every day second semester. It is very compressed/intense and magnifies the impact of a student or teacher missing a week of school for illness. It’s also terrible for AP classes.
The 4x4 semester block schedule was awful for so many reasons, not the least of which was that students could go a whole year with not having math or language (e.g., if they had math in the fall semester of one year and not until the spring semester of the following year). There are a lot of school systems doing this and it makes no sense (think about all the evidence of learning loss over the summer and then explain how this is not 10x worse when kids go a whole year without a core subject!!!!)....in any event, it is very good that J-R is back to its old schedule of year-long classes for all non-electives.
does that include languages?
