I would love to hear recent experiences at Glen Haven Elementary School. Or, if you live in the neighborhood and opted for private school, please share where and why?
I have heard a few good things but I am having a hard time finding folks to talk to about it! Please share! |
| No first hand experience, but I knew a family whose two kids went/go there, and they always had positive things to say about the school. |
| That’s nice to hear. Thank you for responding |
| Does anyone else know anything about this school? Anyone live in the neighborhood or surrounding area? |
| I have friends who used to attend but left the area for a new job about a year ago. However, they were extremely happy while they were there. The principal there used to be the assistant principal at my children's school, and she's fantastic. My experience is that administrators make a huge difference at the elementary school level, particularly in economically diverse schools like Glen Haven. |

That is great to hear! Thank you! 😀 I appreciate your response.
I’m just really curious why I’m having such a hard time finding more families and info about the school. There are lots of threads on here, Facebook, etc about Oakland Terrace, Flora singer and some other nearby elementary schools but not so much on Glen Haven. Are less parents on these chats? Do a lot of kids go to private? Are people indifferent about the school? Hard to know! |
| I was looking to buy in that area and talked to a friend of mine whose DD goes to the school. She has been very happy so far though I think the aftercare program gets mixed reviews. She has met a lot of parents at playgrounds and knows many families nearby. The house I looked at escalated higher then I felt comfortable with so I passed on it but it seemed to be a nice quiet neighborhood. |
| It is a very nice neighborhood. Thanks for sharing your friends experience. |
| Any updated info on this school? |

I have kids there. It’s a lovely community. There has been a lot of change with a new principal and a lot of new staff. There are pros and cons, just like any school.
I think a lot of the other schools in our area have many more people attending. GH is land locked and a walking school so it’s limited in that sense. Good luck! |
I would not read too much which schools get mentioned a lot here. I think there are certain neighborhoods that are more represented on DCUM than others. I also feel like a lot of parents overstate how great their kids' schools are because it's depressing to believe you are sending you children to so-so or bad schools. Other sources of info that allow you to get a better comparison are: - The MCPS School Climate Surveys: https://sharedaccountability.mcpsmd.org/SurveyResults/content.php - The Maryland School Report Card (look up individual schools where you can see aggregate scores regarding academic performance and student and staff surveys): https://reportcard.msde.maryland.gov/ |
| My friend's daughter goes there and they love it. It's a really small school -- everyone is a walker, there's no bus service. I don't think they love the aftercare program there (it's not KAH or Bar-T, something else), but otherwise she'd had good things to say. |
| OP here. Thank you all for taking the time to reply! This info is really helpful |
| Hello! I just wanted to follow up with this question and see if anyone has any updated experiences or information about Glen Haven ES? It would be greatly appreciated! |

I'm a parent who is new to the neighborhood & have asked this question on DCUM before:
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1189577.page From what I've gathered, the principal is liked, at least by those commenting here. I've also read through their PTA minutes & looked at the PTA Facebook page, and it seems that there is a group of engaged parents. I suggest glancing through the minutes as they seem to highlight both positives and challenges of the school. Regardless, we've moved and will give the school a try. If you're already here as well, maybe we'll run into each other.
