ICYMI- your MD tax dollars will pick up pregnacy healthcare bills...

...no matter what your immigration status might be.

I've been very busy this summer and just found out about this legislation that came into effect July 1st.

https://www.marylandmatters.org/2022/05/26/with-healthy-babies-equity-act-maryland-will-join-other-states-that-provide-prenatal-care-regardless-of-immigration-status/

https://dcist.com/story/23/06/30/md-health-care-pregnant-non-citizens/

So if you illegally enter the United States, Maryland legislators think MD tax payers should pick up your medical bill. If you are a hard working, life long MD resident who lives on 45k/year - you are on your own. Got it.

Has there ever been an organization that has played local governments like a fiddle as CASA has before? I can't think of one in my 50+ years of living in DC/MD.

This is a wonderful thing. A growing, healthy population is necessary for the entire metropolitan area to succeed. That child will be more likely to grow up to be a productive member of society with supports like these than if they were left to wither on the vine.

If you are a hard working, lifelong MD resident making 45k/year, you are not on your own. Taxpayers are already subsidizing their existence through the EITC, ACA exchange subsidies, and perhaps even programs like SNAP and WIC depending on household size.

"The Healthy Babies Equity Act, which passed the General Assembly in March along mostly party lines with Republicans opposed, expands Medicaid to cover prenatal and postpartum care to pregnant people regardless of immigration status. Seventeen other states, including Virginia and Texas, provide coverage to pregnant people regardless of immigration status through Medicaid or other state-established programs."

This is great news. Thank you for the information! I am happy to hear that Maryland now has an additional way to care for the health of US citizens and their families.

Another MD taxpayer who thinks this is great (and what a real “pro-life” agenda looks like)

Oh, ffs, let's not begrudge women pre and postnatal care based on where they were born.

I was gonna say... I thought Rs were pro-life? What is more pro-life than providing medical care to pregnant women and their babies?

That's because Republicans aren't pro-life, they're pro-forced-birth.

I would hope all anti-abortionists would support this bill. Since they like to call themselves pro-life and are worried about that fetus. I'd hope they would support this for all pregnant women who have no insurance or means to pay for pregnancy bills.

Horrible. Subsidizing illegal immigration.

Who needs laws?

So, prolife is only applied to real Americans?

MAGA leader flaunts laws all the time. That's why there are so many lawsuits against him.

Yep. Pathetic.

Maybe it will help if you think of the pregnant person as merely an incubator/womb for the baby US citizen, rather than as an actual person?

So giving out huge wads of cash to baby mamas here illegally and who have little means to support a family because they earn such little money.

Yay. Truly a fantastic idea that won't bring down the state even more. Ha yea right. Subsidization of illegal immigration and encouraging poverty.

Fast track to a 3rd world country.

Under current law, the Maryland Department of Health provides Medicaid coverage for emergency medical services — including labor and delivery — for low-income undocumented residents who would be eligible for coverage but for their immigration status. The state also provides coverage for the first year of a child’s life if their mother was covered by Medicaid at the time of birth.

Last year, more than 5,000 undocumented immigrant women gave birth in the ER, at a cost of $89 million, about 50% covered by federal funds.

The bill passed this year would require the state to apply to the federal government for an expansion of Medicaid, which is expected to increase the federal reimbursement rate to 65%. Overall, legislative analysts estimated that the prenatal and postpartum care expansion would increase state spending by about $14.8 million, though a higher federal reimbursement for labor and delivery would mostly offset those costs.

The state could also see additional savings if the prenatal care reduces pregnancy complications and early childhood health issues, analysts said.

Looks like solid fiscal AND public health policy, to me. And pro-life too, of course.
