Does your high school kid's sport require they dress up (for class) on game days?

At my son's school, the sport teams he has participated in require that they dress up (dress shirt, tie, nice shoes, etc.) for class on game days.
His first year, they didn't give us much notice-told us the night before! My son was able to borrow a shirt and tie from my husband, but we had to hurry over to the local DSW and buy him some dress shoes. We weren't the only ones, my son saw several of his team mates at the shoe store, also buying dress shoes.

Is this dress up thing pretty standard in high school sports?

Complete B.S. That is not required even at McLean or Langley HS, schools in expensive neighborhood.

Wait, your DS doesn't have a dress shirt? Don't you go to church or a funeral or a school dance? To answer your question, my DS dressed up on game days, but it was 10 years ago.

At our MCPS HS, my son’s soccer team did this. He opted out after the 1st game and nobody seemed to care. No teammates gave him a hard time. The coach doesn’t work at the school during the day so I doubt he would even know. I did notice a lot of football players doing it but again I don’t know what would happen if they simply said no.

Is it mandatory? My DD follows the theme on game days when she has the items but not every single game.

This will be hard for you to imagine, but plenty of families do not go to church. And do your kids really go to so many funerals that their funeral clothes still fit them?!

Yes, this was definitely a thing when I was in school. I think it was only for away games, and for home games they wore their jerseys to school.

I think the idea is to draw attention to the fact that there is a game that day, so that it might encourage spectators to show up. At my kid's school (W-L in Arlington), not complying wasn't a big deal, but that might differ from team to team and school to school.

Um, no. My son plays a fall sport and a different spring sport and this has never been required or even suggested.

Well, he does now-but at that time, no he didn't.

No we don't go to a church that requires dress shirts
No, he has never been to a funeral. We're pretty fortunate that few people we know have died.
No, he didn't go to any middle school dances. We first encountered this dress up policy with a fall sport in his first year of high school.

All sports did this back when I was in high school in the 90s. I was surprised my kid’s school didn’t. They wear the team jerseys on game day.
