In a previous thread a few people named Veronica Beard blazers as being great for blazers. It got me wondering about which brands to look at when shopping for blazers. How can I identify a good blazer if it's not from a high-end brand? If you were to save up to buy one blazer which one would you buy (to go with mostly black pants and skirts)? |
I want to have one made by this guy.
https://www.streetsmarttailoring.com/ I think fit is really the main thing for blazers. People like the Veronica Beard blazers because the fabrics are nice enough and the styling is a little more flirty/fun while still being structured. But none of that matters if it doesn’t fit. |
I posted previously about how much I love Veronica Beard blazers. Here are a few other brands/styles I like:
ALC: https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/a.l.c.-sedgwick-ii-double-breaster-blazer?ID=4366399 Generation Love (particularly like their tweed ones) Jcrew Parke/Regent blazer Derek Lam 10 Crosby |
I like the Rag & Bone Slade style |
I go to eBay and look for my size. The ones with wool or wool blend tend to be the ones that I pull out if my closest the most. Talbots, Jcrew, Banana Republic are my work horse ones.
Fit is everything. I need a petite size and find thousands to choose from for not a lot of money. |

I can’t give a good guide but I’m sure you can google what to look for. For example, many of MM La Fleurs blazers are not for me because I’m not tall enough, despite being lovely blazers. And I’m not going to pay $500 for a blazer that needs extensive tailoring |
I have a Smythe duchess blazer in navy that is approaching 10 years old and still looks fresh and works with everything- was expensive but worth it. Note they run really small.
Also love A.L.C. |
Not high end ones I love:
J.Crew Boden Banana Republic |
Not the OP but thanks for the rec on Generation Love. Never heard of them but their blazers are cute! OP, I also really like Veronica Beard blazers - the double breasted style creates a nice waist on me. I stalk their clothes on The Real Real and generally pay about 50% of the retail price. I've also recently gotten some crazy deals on off-season pieces from Saks - like 70-80% off a VB coat and blouse. |
It's about fit. Learn to tailor one it's worth the effort. It takes me about a hour to get it perfect for me. It's really easy. |
Theory, Ann Taylor, J.Crew |
White House Black Market. |
I don't understand the love for Veronica Beard. Their jackets are mostly polyester - and absolutely look like polyester/synthetic jackets in real life. But they cost $700. For that price, i would expect i'm buying a baller blazer that looks like i'm the powerplayer in a meeting. Those blazers do not look like that in real life though. |
I also don’t like Veronica Beard blazers. I actually really love the brooks brothers classic blue blazer. Nothing like it. |
Wow, this is great advice. I always assumed they were out of my price range. Never occurred to me to try the Real Real. Thank you! |
