reading habits

I am in awe of how much some of you read (and that you can read/post on DCUM and not waste too much time). Are you just fast readers? Don't need sleep? What are your best habits?

I lost interest in watching TV/Netflix/etc. I pick up a book around 7 PM, when dinner is done and read until 10 or 11, when i go to bed.

I do love watching sports, so during football and basketball season, I might watch 1-2 games per week.

sounds like a lot of it is listening to audio books, though and calling it "reading." It's not really reading. It's listening.

I did a grad degree in creative writing and we were reading about 3 novels a week plus some essays, short stories and poems. I learned to read quickly. So yeah, I'm fast.

I am a fast reader. Reading is also my primary hobby, and I spend a couple hours each Sat and Sun reading.

I also read as a break after work before starting dinner, and some nights before bed.

I read for 30 minutes every morning while drinking my coffee and before getting ready for work. I listen to NPR on my commute so I know what’s going on in the world.

I try to read 30 minutes around lunchtime, though that’s no always possible.

I go to the gym after work, but then read another 30 minutes or so when I get home and before making dinner.

After dinner, I put on a Spotify playlist and read.

I do even more reading on the weekends.

I bet a lot of us just don’t watch many shows or movies. I know people who spend HOURS watching shows. I might binge watch a couple shows per year, but I really don’t watch anything religiously.

I probably read quickly, but I think it’s more about reading taking the place of TV for many of us.

Best habit: if you have the space, don’t have a TV in your living room. It’s the most comfortable room in the house and it’s where we read. The TV is in the basement.

I think a lot of people turn on the TV by habit and then get sucked into watching random shows. My mother-in-law will watch HGTV for hours because they put episodes of shows on back to back. My dad will watch cable news the same way.

I almost never watch TV. I read on my commute (Metro) on in office days, and read from about 7:30-10:30 most evenings. I listen to audiobooks occasionally, too. If we don’t have plans on the weekend I could read for the entire day minus time hanging out with my kids (teens).

My problem isn't TV; it's the mindless scrolling.

+1 There is no tv in my living room. Unfortunately, in the age of streaming, I am not benefitting from that like I used to -- I just binge on my laptop. But yes, still great advice.

+1 OMG, me too. I deleted my TikTok. Then deleted my FB account. Then deleted Instagram. Then I ended up here. God help me.

That's awesome how many books a week do you read?

Same. I have little kids and I don’t read or watch shows properly as much as I’d like because my time to focus and read is like. In the bath age the kids go to bed on weekends. And I’m constantly sleep deprived so it’s addictive clicky games and DCUM for me. 😩

I did put Libby on my phone which helped a lot — if I have a book I’m enjoying going, I’ll read on my phone rather than doom scrolling sometimes. And library books have deadlines which helps.

It depends on how dense the writing is, of course. I can read about 50 pages per hour and most books I read are 350-450 pages. So I guess I’m reading 5-7 books per week?

Almost everything I read is borrowed through Libby.
