7 and 9 year old obsessed with Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Anonymous
My 7 - and 9 year old boys have read all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books for three years, many, many times. They get at least 3 of them every time we go to the library. What is with these books? I keep trying to get them into other authors, and they read other books, but none as much as these. Is this normal?

Yes and it will pass eventually.

My 8 year old has been really into them but he recently diverted to Dog Man.

Yes, normal. My 9 year old has gone through all the DOAWK books and watched the movies multiple times. He’s now moved on to reading Big Nate, but also still loves Dog Man and Batpig. These types of graphic novels are big with this age group. I figure anything that gets him excited to read for pleasure is good. He isn’t into fiction otherwise so if it’s not these types of books it’s science stuff or like sports biographies. Maybe you could encourage some nonfiction if they’re not finding other authors they like.

Cheese Touch!!

My kids are older now and well out of the Diary of a Wimpy kid phase. Your kids will eventually move on too.

Great books. Great movies.

Yes, my son was obsessed in 3rd grade. It passed by the end of 4th.

I miss that stage. Enjoy it while it lasts. Totally normal.

Yes, we watch the movie too!

This phase shall pass just like others have said. Be glad they want to “read”.

They're hilarious, easy to read, great illustrations, and really relatable to kids.

Have you ever read them??

We've watched the movies (also really funny) and we have 1 of the board games.

Super basic. Aim higher for your kids. Don’t listen to the pop culture sheep on DCUM.

This is a stupid answer, but if OP wants to expose her kids to more sophisticated reading, she should read those to them. But let the kids pick what they want.

I am really enjoying “The Long Haul” when the mother decides to take them on a road trip. It is very funny. But some of it goes over my 7 year old’s head. He also reads Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol, Magic Tree House, Hamster chapter books, etc.
