| Looking for a recommendation for a young teen boy who is engaged in a pretty heavy training schedule with swim and another high impact sport. For various reasons his dad and I are not up to the job. Just don’t know enough or have a solid enough foundation in nutrition to say what he needs. |
| Does your club have a nutrition page? Ours does. If not ask the coach to send you links for info. |
| Yes, but I think a personal touch would be better than mom and dad trying to educate. Also, would like someone to give specific advice for his particular schedule. It is pretty intense and he struggles with headaches and performance sometimes. I think nutrition is something he needs to think about more seriously instead of just winging it. |

Although not a sports nutritionist my high school swimmer has received good advice from his trainer at the gym (drylands). He does listen to him more than mom so I get it. And he kept it simple lots of meat and rice!

Thanks! I’m thinking our gym may have similar guidance for him—and he’d be interested in performance training out of the water, so we will start there. My instincts aren’t way off (I was thinking lots of grain bowls and protein) but still, so much easier for a coach/trainer to get through. |
| Are there message boards that are sports specific for higher level athletes? We found one for a different sport through one of those pages. It's helpful to have information coming from someone who really understands the sports, the demands on the body and how to fuel to avoid RED-S. |
Good idea and thanks—I went searching and found some very specific guidance for his other sport. I don’t know why I didn’t think about this, definitely unique needs for different kinds of training. Apparently I have not been feeding him enough carbs—need to reduce fat and replace those calories with quite a bit more crabs. Like triple what I would normally eat myself and I don’t eat “low carb” or anything. Hope it helps! |
