Bagel Board logistics

Anonymous
Hi all, I'm planning on putting together a bagel board for a daytime birthday party. This is a stupid question, but do I split and toast the bagels beforehand? Or do I just split and leave untoasted? I don't want them to get hard but I'm going to have 2+ dozen bagels out so not sure how to manage toasting all of them. Also, if I want to put out lox, do I need to keep it on ice? Party is 2-3 hours. Thanks

Yes lox should be kept on ice.

Do you have a toaster that can toast 2-3 bagels at once? I would also consider buying a second toaster or borrowing one for the party. You could also toast a lot at once in the oven.

Don't pre-toast. They will be hard as hockey pucks.

You'll need multiple toasters or a toaster oven

OP here. Do you mean put a toaster out on the buffet table?

Yes, like a continental breakfast at a hotel.

I wouldn’t pre toast. I agree with above PP though to maybe borrow a toaster or two for the party.

I would not worry about toasting. Get good bagels, that were made fresh that morning, and you won't need to toast them. They will be soft and chewy.

You can put some ice in a baking dish, and put the lox serving dish on top. Just keep an eye on it and drain out some of the water as it melts. Or use a rack to keep the lox from sinking and refresh the tray of ice underneath.

Agreed with PP, if they are fresh good bagels then no need to toast!

Depends on the crowd. People familiar with bagels will understand good bagels don’t need to be toasted. The gentiles will be really confused why there’s no toaster no matter how fresh the bagels are.

Omg, no! No one expects 20+ bagels to be toasted for a crowd. Who is unfamiliar with bagels in 2023?

In 2023, many many people have never had a fresh bagel made that day and are only familiar with bagels from a bag in the grocery store. Almost no one in my extended family has. All I'm saying is that people like that would be looking around for the toaster. It's not a huge deal, but something to consider.

This sounds delicious. I would slice, but not toast. That's nice for when people want half of two different kinds of bagels.

This would be my mother! And if she couldn’t toast it, she’d smile, go sit down, and then just pick at it.
