I just watched the 2003 version of this movie with Eddie Murphy.
I am wondering why the movie was remade. Is it still based on the ride at Magic Kingdom? |
| Given that it was last made 20 years ago maybe they needed to remake it to continue copy right claims. |
Wouldn't Disney still own the copyright, since it's based on the ride at Magic Kingdom? I thought it was a cute movie, if you've been to the ride and you know the back story of the Haunted Mansion. I'm actually thinking about going to see the new version of the movie. I'm more excited for that than Barbieheimer. |
| Saw over the weekend. Cute! Belong to AMC A-List...so also saw Barbie + Oppenheimer. |
Not necessarily. Copy right laws get complicated and you really need to work on copy righting everything from images to music and everything in between. There was a case in which someone was selling t-shirts with the Wizard of Oz film poster on it and MGM tried to sue but apparently the never copyrighted the poster, just the film so they lost. In another case the film the Its a Wonderful Life had fallen out of the copyright laws domain but because they were able to keep the music under copyright the owners continue to be able to ask for royalties to be paid. The last Space Jam was basically made to renew copy rights on all the old characters same with the Tom and Jerry movie nobody was asking for. |
| I had no idea this is how copyrights are extended. Can’t one just apply for an extension as opposed to funding an entire movie? |
| Wow I was totally unaware of the copyright thing..thanks for sharing |
That was my thought too. Sane with (invention ) patents. |
Patents . . . . you file "maintenance fees" and they get pricey the longer you want to maintain it. |
| The 2003 Haunted Mansion film was the lowest performing Disney adaptation film in Disney history. This 2023 version performed just as poorly at the box office coming in as 2nd worst. |
The marketing for this film was insane. Billboards everywhere, commercials, etc. Looked totally boring. Considered taking my son to it tonight anyway bc he was begging to go to the theater, but it was PG13. |
I actually thought the trailer looked excited. Or rather, my kids love haunted mansion (the ride). We wanted to see the movie. I saw a trailer during Indiana Jones and it looked more horror like and scary than the trailers and commercials I have seen on TV. Like two totally different movies. I think it was a bad idea coming out when Barbie came out. but the scary trailer made me want to see it. |

The first half of the movie was A+
Absolutely astounding cast. My kid loved it, so I’m glad we went. I felt it sort of didn’t know how to go full camp, which was something this kind of movie could have done so well. I also was disappointed at how little screen time Daniel Levy had. |
