Can someone remind me whether MS grades are on the transcript and included in GPA? Thinking of classes like Algebra, Geometry and foreign language.
Thanks |
| Those classes and their grades are on the transcript, but they are only included in the GPA if it improves the average. |
| Can you opt out of those classes being on the HS transcript? |
No |

PLEASE Google these answers next time because ALL of the above is wrong 🙄 SO much BS and misinformation on DCUM, may as well be Facebook.
"High School Credit in Middle School Middle school students may take selected high school courses for credit. For students who enter Grade 6 during or after the 2018-2019 school year, the final grade and credit earned for high school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be reported on the high school transcript, but will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA, unless requested by the parent/guardian or the student, if the student is an eligible student, as defined in MCPS Regulation JEA-RB, Enrollment of Students. Middle school students must meet the same requirements as high school students by earning a final grade of A, B, C, or D each semester. Additional information is in MCPS Regulation IKC-RA, Grade Point Averages (GPA) and Weighted Grade Point Averages (WGPA), found at www. montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikcra.pdf |
Ah, the irony. What you Googled and posted above is outdated information. The current regulation text is below, and confirms that the earlier posted information is indeed correct: For students who entered Grade 6 during or after the 2016—2017 school year, the final grade and credit earned for high school courses successfully completed while in middle school will be reported on the high school transcript, but will not be calculated into the cumulative GPA/WGPA, unless the grade earned improves the student’s cumulative GPA/WGPA. If the course grade for a high school course taken in middle school improves the student’s cumulative GPA/WGPA, it will be applied automatically by MCPS. Parents/guardians may opt out of the automatic calculation by contacting the school counselor https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/ikcra.pdf |
You can opt out of the automatic GPA calculation, but cannot opt out of the grades being on the transcript. |
Google fail! Currently, HS classes taken in MS are factored into the GPA if and only if it improves the GPA. |
Do they take into account whether it improves the weighted vs. unweighted GPA? When I was in high school (another district), I took a noncredit summer course, but an A showed up on my transcript. While this A did slightly improve my unweighted GPA, it hurt my weighted GPA, and caused my class rank to slip a bit. I had to argue with the principal to get the A taken off of my transcript. |
Most colleges will ignore MCPS GPA calculations anyway and do their own. This might not include non-academic classes or may not include anything before 9th grade. It just depends on the school. |
The colleges I've spoken with said they don't count any classes taken before high school. So, not only are they not counted for GPA, they're not counted for credit, either. For example, if a student took Spanish 1-3 during middle school, they have completed the MCPS world language requirement, but are not considered by the colleges to have had 3 years of world language. Similarly, if they took Algebra 1 and Geometry in middle school, the colleges would not consider them to have had 2 years of high school math, regardless of the final grade. |
Well, you still have to take 4 years of math in HS. |
