The US soldier ran into NK laughing. Why not just leave him there since that's what he seems to want. Freedom, and all that. I doubt he has any special military or intelligence knowledge to hurt this country.
I say just leave the fool there. I'm sure he's getting great treatment from the North Koreans (/s) https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/us-soldier-flees-into-north-korea-new-crisis-over-nuclear-armed-state-2023-07-19/ |

Yes
Anyone dumb enough to go to nk gets what they deserve. No negotiations. Idiots. |
| Agreed. |
|
I sort of think, in this case that the US military has a responsibility here. They allowed this man to enlist, get through basic training, posted him in SK without realizing he was a nut job? Once he couldn't be deported, he should have been in military custody until that was straightened out
Left stateside, King would likely just have tried to jump the WH fence or something He should never have been in the position to run across the border, IMO |
|
I think the US will make a half ass effort to get him back.
Whatever intel he has n korea will torture it out of him so until they are done with that there is no negotiation possible. Even if he gives up everything freely they will probably still torture him to be sure. Going to be a bad few months for that guy. |

We rescue people when they get in trouble. Sometimes smarties get into trouble but more usually it's dummies who get themselves into trouble.
There's no IQ test required before we rescue people. Really, OP. Think this through. |
He’s a PV2 who with two years in should be a PFC by now. He doesn’t have any intel. |
| Also in agreement |
|
Why wasn't he held in the brig until his legal matters with SK government were resolved?
The guy was clearly a nut before he ran across the border. His CoC is going to go through some stuff. |
going on a hike with little water is stupid running into NK is purposefully stupid. He's in the military. He was stationed in SK. Do you really think he did not know what the ramifications were for running into NK? His IQ was high enough for the military to put a gun in his hand and station him in the DMZ. |
| This is history repeating itself. There was a documentary, Crossing the Line, which came out back in 2006 about 3 US soldiers in the 60s who ran to NK and defected to avoid being court-martialed. In the documentary, we see their lives all these years later, completely cut off from the rest of the world and unaware of anything that has happened outside of NK. They all found their niche in the NK propaganda machine. I wouldn't assume torture necessarily, since that's not what happened before. |
I doubt it. It’s obvious from his rank and recent jail sentence that he doesn’t have any intel, and they don’t want to discourage others from defecting. Maybe they get him to appear in propaganda videos talking about how great things are in NK. |
He was being sent back to the US. He was brought to the airport by guards but they couldn’t go through security so once he was alone he found a way to leave the airport. And go on a tour of the JSA. It’s a really bizarre story and a really bizarre decision on his part. Perhaps he had a mental break of some sort. |
Wow, this is even worse for the CoC. Why wasn't he put on a military flight out of the country? Or, at the very least, you coordinate with local SK police to get this guy accompanied to the gate and on the plane back to the U.S. This is so dopey and ham-handed. |
