I don't know how to swim

Anonymous
Don't get me wrong, i won't drown. I can tread water like a champ and do breaststroke to get where I want to go. But actually swim? Nope.

And what makes this humiliating is that DH and DS18 are competitive swimmers: both with full rides via D1 programs.

Plus, I'm fat now. Haven't worn a swimsuit in 15+ years. Should I bother learning? No one knows I can't swim.

You know how to swim well enough to stay alive, so you don’t need to learn more if you don’t want to.

Do you want to go swimming, OP? If so, do it! Fat people swim too. At least this fat person does.

If you don’t want to, don’t. There are things you know how to do that your DH and DS don’t. I bet that doesn’t bother them.

Do what you want. I can't swim either; I'm 50 with young adult kids. Everyone else can swim. I do not care.

I can't swim. I don't know what you mean that you can do a stroke but can't swim - don't understand how that can be true. But whatever - I would drown. I really can't swim. I went on a ferry a couple of months ago, and haven't been in a pool in over two decades. If you spend a lot of time near water, you should learn how. If you don't, why bother?

Me either. We were beach people jumping waves and rarely at the pool. It's alright.

OP, it's on your mind enough that you posted here. Would you consider taking a class? I took an adult swim class the winter before covid. It was fun and I improved quickly. Everyone was super supportive. I intended to go back and get good enough that I could start doing it for exercise, but covid.

Same skill level here. I'm contemplating about taking swimming lessons as adult and doing laps at our local pool.

I took an adult swim class, not the lowest one since I can sorta swim (level 3 or 4) through Fairfax County and it was a very good experience.

There are swim lessons for adults at every ssw center in this area. You should sign up and learn. Swimming is a great sport to take up as you age. It’s easy on your joints and gives you a full body workout. Plus when you take an adult swim lesson, they’re only other adults at your same level, so there’s no embarrassment or shame.

Why not?

No, actually. I'm quite the failure.

I guess I mean I can't swim the front crawl. The stroke everyone starts with.

I tried to learn as an adult. I was prepared to book a class but a friend with swim instructor experience offered to teach me.

I couldn’t do it! You have to put your face in the water without holding your nose or anything, lol. Not for me. I can doggypaddle and float well enough to be drown proof. What more do you really need?

If you haven't worn a swimsuit in 15 years, how can you tread water like a champ?

So basically you learned to run before you learned to walk? So you're advanced.

I’ve taught adult swim lessons and I highly recommend you learn to swim. It is amazing how triumphant folks feel when they really learn to swim.

Go for it!!
