No fridge for a week- how to feed kid?

Anonymous
Our freezer is working but not our fridge. New one wont get here for a week. Tips on how to feed kid for the week? Grown ups will just do a lot of take out but we don’t want a 3 yo to eat takeout everyday. I will try to freeze what I can and cook from frozen but I can’t freeze some things. For example, she drinks milk everyday- what do I do about that?

Do you have a good cooler? If not, buy a good cooler. You'll have to replace the ice every day or two, but it will keep milk, cheese, and other dairy cold enough to be palatable and safe.

Heck, get a cheap cooler and just top off or replace the ice more frequently.

Go to your local walmart/target/lowes/whatever and buy a mini-fridge.

Ask your neighbors and friends if they have one sitting in a garage you can borrow. Know anyone with a college kid who lives in a dorm during the year but is home for the summer now? They probably have one sitting in a pile of their college stuff.

You can get a mini fridge for like $30

Op her. Seeing some very small mini fridges for $50 on Amazon but those fit like 6 cans of drinks. The cheapest normal size one I can find is about $120. Hate the thought of spending that when we already are paying a ton to replace the fridge

Use a cooler.

Just feed the kid take out. He’ll live. It’s not the Christ Child.

Some foods that don’t require a fridge:
Pasta with pasta sauce, rice, salad, veggies, canned beans, couscous, chickpeas, fruits, etc…

+1 even a styrofoam cooler box will work fine too. You can get horizon shelf stable milk boxes. Pretend you are going camping maybe throw in some marshmallows too!

Any kind of cooler will work as long as you keep replacing the ice. Just do that.

If you're only going to need it for a week, you'll be done with it before all the college kids go to school. You'll probably be able to sell it.

Post on your local FB or Next Door page asking to borrow a mini fridge for a week. Or, see if a friendly neighbor will let you borrow fridge space for any essentials.

Use shelf stable milk. For a week eat more processed foods than normal whether shelf stable or frozen. Mac and cheese. Pasta. Peanut butter. Rice. Frozen waffles. It's summer so stock up on fruits and veggies for every meal.

For stuff you do want refrigerated be a little less efficient and buy single servings of things like jam, hummus or guacamole so that you aren't dealing with open containers after making lunch.

See if you can borrow one for a week or two from someone on your local Buy Nothing group on FB. But I agree with others - get a decent cooler and keep buying ice at the gas station and it should work for a week. Shelf stable milks are also available if you’re concerned about that.
