Next year is my kid’s last summer before college and we want to do a big trip as a family. He like exploring new cities, but also enjoys gorgeous beaches. He’s a somewhat adventurous eater We have about 2.5 weeks and want to split our time between two countries.
One will probably be Korea or possibly Japan, although Korea is more affordable. For the second, we’re considering the Philippines, Thailand, or Vietnam. I’ve spent lots of time in Korea and Japan, but have never been to Southeast Asia so not sure how easy it is to navigate for someone who doesn’t speak the language. Where would you opt to go? |
| Thailand |
| Vietnam. |
| Vietnam. Everyone who sells anything to tourists (restaurants, hotels, tours, museums; transportation) speaks enough English. |
| Thailand |
| Just go to Australia/New Zealand. |
| Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia would all be cool to visit and easy to get around with English |
| Philippines |
| Hasn't thr dollar vastly improved vs thr Japanese money? |
| Vietnam |
|
Thailand
Or Oz or NZ |
Why not just answer Kenya/Tanzania? They’re not in Asia either. |
Not everyone is afraid of non white people. |
| Thailand is so easy. You could go there with no plan or luggage at all and have a great time. |

English isn't a problem anywhere in SE Asia.
Thailand is the easiest to travel around. Great for beaches and BKK is a fun city to explore for a few days. Fantastic food tours in BKK, especially in the Chinatown area. Most developed infrastructure in SE Asia outside Singapore. Vietnam has a lot to offer, culturally, and food is among the best, but there's a lot of hassles too. The cities are intense, some people will love them, others will hate them. My favorite part was Hoi Ahn and the mountains in the north. Cambodia was eh. Angor Wat was decent but once you've seen most of the cultural offerings across SE Asia, it's just more of the same. Food is nowhere as interesting or enjoyable as in Thailand or Vietnam. Siem Reap is VERY banana pancake trail. Just keep in mind that Japan/Korea aren't that close to SE Asia. Flights will probably be 6+ hours, so you're losing a whole day of travel plus you're even further back from the US when you need to return. |
