Which two countries in Asia would you choose?

Not everyone is afraid of non white people.

Interesting assumption...says a lot about your and your biases.

I’m planning a 2-week trip to Korea next year and that’s barely enough time to fit in the minimum number of things we’d want to see there. Similarly, we’ve done two 2-week trips to Japan and feel like we need at least 2-3 more 2-week trips.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The flights alone from US to Korea/Japan will knock you out for a few days at the beginning. There's a lot to see in those countries. I'd rather spend the time getting to know these places better than rushing from airport to airport. Just change the focus of the trip within the country so after the cities, spend some time in the countryside for hiking or even beaches somewhere to see a different angle of Japanese or Korean life. Going from Japan or Korea to SE Asia still represents a lost day of travel on both ends, cutting into the time you have available. It's not going from Belgium to France.

Why not just answer Kenya/Tanzania? They’re not in Asia either.

Better weather in Oz.

A safari would be cool though.

How about Singapore and Malaysia, so you don't have long fights from country to country?

Philippines is pretty cool. I used to live a short flight away and go for a few days at a time, and really enjoyed it. Not sure it's where I'd pick if I were going on a once in a lifetime trip, v a trip I just felt like taking.

Once in a lifetime trip is a lot of pressure, that said!

What sort of travel do you and your kid enjoy, OP? Beaches, cities, food, off the beaten path, luxury, ...? Any type of food you especially like or don't like? Any places you've always wanted to see - or things you've always wanted to do?

I’d be afraid of getting sick in Asia due to food. I would do Europe or Australia.

Thailand is the easiest to travel around. Great for beaches and BKK is a fun city to explore for a few days. Fantastic food tours in BKK, especially in the Chinatown area. Most developed infrastructure in SE Asia outside Singapore.

Vietnam has a lot to offer, culturally, and food is among the best, but there's a lot of hassles too. The cities are intense, some people will love them, others will hate them. My favorite part was Hoi Ahn and the mountains in the north.

Cambodia was eh. Angor Wat was decent but once you've seen most of the cultural offerings across SE Asia, it's just more of the same. Food is nowhere as interesting or enjoyable as in Thailand or Vietnam. Siem Reap is VERY banana pancake trail.

Just keep in mind that Japan/Korea aren't that close to SE Asia. Flights will probably be 6+ hours, so you're losing a whole day of travel plus you're even further back from the US when you need to return.

This is offensive. Also, the best meal I had in SE Asia was in Siem Riep. Maybe you just don't know how to research restaurants. You seem pretty eh.

Philippines but skip manila. Go to Cebu (has an international airport) or Palawan

dp.. I agree with you, but not everyone has the time or means to spend that much time on vacation or go back to Asia.

We are going to Korea next summer (hopefully), and plan on 3 weeks, and maybe throw in Japan for a few days. My family is from Korea, but I've never been, so I want to spend the bulk of my time in Korea.

+1 to Thailand.

Probably the best food in the world (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam) and you'd skip it. DCUM, never change

Australia is really, really boring. Like, shockingly boring. The only good part is diving at the Great Barrier Reef.

Describe your best meal in SE Asia in a country that's widely known for not having a culinary history or cuisine approaching either Vietnam or Thailand or Malaysia or even Indonesia. I'll make a note of it the next time I pass through Cambodia.
