In Search of NYC Apartment

Anonymous
My son graduated college in May and has a job in lower Manhattan. He is looking to find an apartment/roommates. His preferred areas are Williamsburg, Bushwick (Brooklyn) or East Village but flexible. If anyone knows of something available, please share. Thank you!

Maybe sign up for Nextdoor listserv in those areas and post what you are looking for in terms of housing.

Yes, this. Also suggest to your DC that they sign up for FB groups for those neighborhoods and post accordingly.

A young friend found an apartment in Brooklyn about a month ago. She had to go to NYC to do it, and the apt she ended up getting was an apt where she (and like 5 other people) were blown off by the landlord who was showing it the first time she showed up for an appointment to see it. She was persistent, and got it. But finding an apt was challenging, and she said she couldn't have done it without 1) actually being physically in NY while hunting, and 2) searching aggressively. FWIW, the apt is a one bedroom and she is living in it on her own, but only with family money help.

Pretty much this.

And if it is too good to be true it's a scam. Lots of them on FB, etc where someone copies a listing, posts it, rents it out to someone from out of town, who shows up with their truck o'stuff and there is no apartment and they are out of their money.

You must not have been to Brooklyn in a decade at least.

Please let your adult son figure this out.

I notice you don't question Bushwick.

I don’t know much about it, but I have heard about Williamsburg. Is Bushwick also a big place for Hasidic Jews?

If he wants to hold the lease himself, he will have to go through a broker. It is the only way in NYC. if he’s looking to join a roommate house on an existing lease, look on Facebook and Reddit groups.
