A young friend found an apartment in Brooklyn about a month ago. She had to go to NYC to do it, and the apt she ended up getting was an apt where she (and like 5 other people) were blown off by the landlord who was showing it the first time she showed up for an appointment to see it. She was persistent, and got it. But finding an apt was challenging, and she said she couldn't have done it without 1) actually being physically in NY while hunting, and 2) searching aggressively. FWIW, the apt is a one bedroom and she is living in it on her own, but only with family money help.
Pretty much this. And if it is too good to be true it's a scam. Lots of them on FB, etc where someone copies a listing, posts it, rents it out to someone from out of town, who shows up with their truck o'stuff and there is no apartment and they are out of their money.
