| Mom asks for a pencil so her son, aged about 6-7, can do his schoolwork. I am assuming he's in summer school. The employees at the YMCA childcare weren't accommodating. Mom gets a little frustrated and pulls the younger child out of gym childcare. The mom was going to work on the schoolwork with the older child, it seems, but they didn't have a pencil. The mom says she's confused about why they don't have access to pencils. She also mentioned for $150 a month per child, the YMCA should be able to give them pencils so the older children can draw. She also said when they were touring, it was mentioned the kids could draw and do artwork or work on homework. I can see both sides. I think more than anything, the mom was annoyed she has a child in summer school. |
| Given that she was told they would accommodate homework when she signed up I find it pretty absurd they don’t have the one single thing kids need for homework. Thus not entitled. |

Is this right?
Mom is working out and using the childcare that is available for while she is working out. She asked the attendant there for a pencil for her kid to use. She is mad that the little childcare center at the YMCA does not have a pencil for her kid to use? What's your role here? |
| People expect more from the YMCA as they are a non-profit. I do think pencils are basic and they should have some on hand. It looks like this mom has a special needs kid and uses the childcare to work with this child while the other one is out of the way. |

Not entitled. Why don't they have pencils?!??!?
I would have been frustrated. |
| Why didn't the mom have a pencil in the child's backpack? Why post this here? |
Mom isn't working out, but that is not relevant. She was sitting with child and his pencil broke. The y told her pencils are a safety hazard 😆 |

Who did mom ask? A teenage babysitting attendent or someone at the front desk?
Was mom going to sit in the babysitting area and do work with one kid while the other kid played? Was mom going to sit in the general seating area/waiting area and do homework with her one kid while the other kid was in the babysitting area? Mom had all of the worksheets and homework in maybe a backpack but no pencil? I think that the YMCA could have been more accommodating but mom could have been more prepared. It's not believable to me that mom could not source a pencil from anywhere in the YMCA and I wonder if mom got frustrated that she did not get anywhere with her first inquiry. |
Where was she sitting? In the play area? |
| It is so difficult to follow your story. I am confused by you her and older child. Is this a gym? Summer school? Who needed or wanted the pencil? I’m lost… |
She asked the childcare attendant, who was an adult and also mentioned she had already asked the front desk. Parents aren't allowed to sit in the babysitting area. They were sitting in the general lobby area doing his school work and his pencil broke. |

An American childcare organization does not have pencils on hand? This isn't the third world, people. The mother sounds very overwhelmed and overreacted, obviously, but it's ridiculous the YMCA could not accommodate her very basic request. Do they have soap in the bathrooms? Kind of the same level of need here. |
| It's summer, few kids are in summer school this year. This entire situation is a bit strange. |
Could a pencil sharpener have solved his problem? |
The op said it was at the YMCA childcare. Parents can't sit in the childcare. If the kid needed to do school work, it sounds like he's in summer school, but the summer school isn't at the y. |
