I won the lottery- what should I buy?

Anonymous
I hit $35 on a $5 scratcher this morning. What should I do with this windfall? Get a coffee out everyday for the next week? Split between my kids' 529s? Get a 30 rack of Busch light peach and sit in the baby pool in my yard?

Ha ha. But this could spark and interesting discussion. What would you do if you won, say, $25 mil net lump sum?

  • Hire an attorney and claim the winnings anonymously

  • STFU and never ever tell anyone

  • Pay off mortgage

  • Fully fund our retirement and kids' 529s

  • Hire a money manager to invest $10M and donate the interest to causes we specify

  • Upgrade some furniture and do some home repairs

  • Do an amazing celebratory family vacation

  • Invest the rest

  • I wouldn't change our standard of living much - maybe have the cleaning crew come every week instead of every other week, do nicer vacations generally, maybe trade in a car sooner. And it would be nice to know that private school is an option if the kids need it. But that's it.

$35? Get my favorite Indian take-out.

$25M? Buy more of the same high-tech stocks I already own and which have done so well for me over the years. Also hire a maid to come TIDY UP weekly, then clean. I have ADHD, and sorting through my stuff to tidy up is the worst. Cleaning isn't that bad. It's the tidying I can't do. I would also travel a bit more.

    $35. I would double down.

$25M. I would quit my job. Travel. Buy a new home somewhere amazing (not DC).

Ooooh, yes. I would hire regular home organizers. That would be life-changing.

    Olaplex No. 3, from Sephora.

I’d love to pay off my friends’ mortgages, hire housecleaning weekly and personal organizers. I’d save/invest/donate most of it.

Me too! I think about this often.

How many weeks of the slog did it take to achieve overnight success?

I would take myself out for a cheap dinner except it's never going to happen because I can't afford to waste money on lottery tickets.

My job is cool, the supervisors, not so cool, so I'd definitely leave.
I'd fix up my house and buy a second vehicle. Pay off my brothers mortgage in Florida. After that, I don't know what I'd do.

Someone has mentioned staying anonymous. I always think that winners shouldn't have the option of staying anonymous. If you go on TV and win millions, everyone knows who you are. So what's the difference?

I'd sooner win $25m with publicity than win nothing to keep my anonymity.
