Jr. MCSL Coaches

How much are Jr. Coaches on an MCSL team being paid? These are kids who are helping the coaches and pre-teasers, etc.

Zero, but they do earn SSL hours.

Junior Coaches are not paid. Our school does not allow volunteering hours for something like that either. At the end of each season my kid got a gift card from the team (I think $150?) and a lot of thank you cards from kids. Several families also gave him gift cards ($25-35).

Why would a school not allow volunteer credit for….volunteer work?

He went to a private school in DC. Hours are allowed only for volunteering when there is direct contact with underprivileged, people in need, sick, etc. Marthas's Table, SOME type of organizations. So volunteering for a sports organization is not allowed, unless for Special Olympics.

There is no standard per MCSL. Would be up to the pool. Our pool pays jr coaches the Md training rate, which is the minimum we are allowed. And they don’t get paid for all hours (at meets for example). We allow kids to get service hours for when they aren’t paid but only public school kids can earn service hours for this type of work (most private schools require different types of service as mentioned above).

What is the MD Training rate? I’ve never heard of it. Is the swimmer paid that rate for the summer since the are in training? Are they paid hourly or just a salary at the end of the season?

“Maryland minimum wage laws allow the Maryland Department of Labor employers to establish regulations that allow employers to pay learners a subminimum wage that is no less than 80% of the standard minimum wage.”

I think since they are “junior coaches” in high school learning from the head coach, they can earn this rate. Team pays them hourly.

It very much depends on how much they are expected to be there. Hourly seems best if you can manage it and agree with your head coach what the expectations are.

Most junior coaches make 500-600. A token amount that is not reported for tax purposes. That said, if a junior coach really excels I’ve seen them get into the 1500-2200 range. That’s if the kid can really coach. If it’s just mommy getting someone a job for a resume they usually make $500

This depends by team

Our team pays $500 for Jr. Coaches. They help at meets and work with the younger kids. Many of these kids grew up on the team and now cheering and encouraging the new younger generation. It’s more of a token salary and not meant to be a salaried job like the coach’s job. Most teams do not pay and the kids get SSL hours.it’s a fun job for most swimmers.
