Plantar fasciitis next steps - custom insoles? special shoes?

Anonymous
I've dealt with plantar fasciitis for a long time (I have very high arches and I walk a lot) so I already do the basics like stretching, massage, hard insole supports, never going barefoot. I tried a new sport this past spring that caused a flare-up. Even though I've stopped the sport, I can't get the pain to resolve with the usual measures.

Are custom orthotics worth it? They are a few hundred dollars, plus they look huge like I may need new bigger shoes to fit them.

What about specialty shoes like Orthofeet? I already wear Asics sneakers (with insert) and Vionics slippers: are the other brands better?

What else? I don't want an injection if I can avoid it.

The injection is the quickest and best solution. Find a doctor.

I had tried everything w/ minimal relief and had a big flare due to bad shoes and a new sport. I started going to a Chinese foot massage place twice weekly. Their massages are just calves down and are almost painful but I got relief after the first one and 3 weeks later it’s completely gone

I have custom inserts that I wear with New Balance sneakers - those tend to run a smidge wide.

Like at home, or with a PT? If a PT, can you recommend a doc or type of doc?

Thin person here with debilitating PF. It's not a problem solely for overweight people. The shots didn't really work for me. Oofos recovery slides help a ton. I also bought a pair of super ugly Oofo sneakers that I wear out of the house when I'm having a bad flare. Tried custom orthotics, danskos, hokas, and every PF gadget you can find. Oofos, stretching, lacrosse ball on the thighs, and soaking my feet in cold water helped.

Shock treatment, custom orthotics, hokas including the hoka recovery slide, at home shiatsu foot massager, strengthen your calves.

Only thing that fixed it for me was acupuncture.

Tons and tons of calf stretching (downward dog, all the time)

My plantar fasciitis issues completely disappeared when I gave up gluten. I had other symptoms that were irritating (hives), which is why I started eating GF, but the decrease in inflammation has been pretty surprising to me. My feet have no pain now, where they used to hurt when I got up in the morning, or stood for a while, or exercised.

YMMV, but throwing it out there. I know it sounds crazy. I used to need orthotics that only sort of helped, but my feet have been pretty happy for a while now.

i only wear VIONIC shoes or Birkenstock sandals. The fix for me is active release therapy on my calves.
