Opt-out policy

I got an email about security at the school board meeting for tomorrow, when public comments are being taken about the opt-out policy in terms of LGBTQ-friendly materials in class. When does the board actually vote and make a decision? Tomorrow or a later meeting?

Given the security posture, I am sure the school board will not vote for an Opt-out.

There isn't a vote. There are only public comments.

It’s amazing how the right to religious freedom is being trampled on at MCPS. We are literally one of the 13 original colonies. And the sad part is that people are afraid to speak up because crazies like Kristin Mink or Jill Ortman Fouse will call them a white supremacist and get away with it.

I saw both of them at Silver Spring Pride yesterday and expressed my heartfelt gratitude for the work they've done to create a safe learning environment for lgbtq+ kids and teens.

As a person of faith, my religion is not being trampled, and I'm proud that my faith community is one of those publicly supporting queer kids, educators, and staff in MCPS.

I won't be at tomorrow's event, but I'll be praying for a positive outcome.

Your “religious freedom” is not being trampled on. Just stop. You don’t get to opt out of core curriculum simply because you don’t like a book where there are two moms. You’re free to enroll your child at a religious school or home school them. But you don’t get to claim your religious freedoms are being trampled on.

No opt out.

You're welcome to home school your kids or send them to a madrasa or catholic school. Lots of options.

I think the issue here is homophobia and transphobia, not white supremacy, but I’d be thrilled if all the bigots left MCPS and MoCo. Move to VA.

Parents have the right to have all kinds of opinions about their kids' education. Opine away.

They do. They elect BoE members, choose to enroll kids in public or private schools, etc.

This is really objectionable. Public school is for everyone, even if you don't like them. Not everyone can afford private school, and it's not good public policy to encourage children to get insular educations. You want them to be exposed to others and learn tolerance. And tolerance goes both ways, FWIW. The 1st amendment expressly protects freedom of religion. An opt out policy is a much saner policy than a book ban.

No, it's not. You don't get to opt out of other people's Iives. They exist.

You realize you sound Ike someone decades ago fighting segregation or interracial marriage which is why those fighting for the opportunity to opt out are being called bigots, homophobes, etc. It is because you are
