Do you license your indoor only cat?

Anonymous
My city requires all cats to be licensed, but it seems a little absurd to license (and pay a few bucks every year) to license a cat that never steps outside, and isn't one curious about escaping.

We adopted her from the Animal Welfare League which also operates the city's Animal Control, so my guess is they have a record of our adoption and would report us? Anyone stop renewing their pet's license? What happened? Did you get fined?

We DO take kitty for an annual checkup and rabies vaccination just in case, but the licensing seems over the top. What exactly is the point?

I don’t know, I wouldn’t worry beyond microchipping and whatever the vet requires. I always assume my dog’s rabies tag IS the license.

I made the mistake of licensing one of our 2 indoor cats. But one year we were late in renewing and it turned into a huge ordeal where they made me show up in person to the MC animal shelter to straighten it out. After that I decided never again. On top of it, his rabies vaccination (which is always kept current) doesn’t align with the license dates so I was always having to submit copies in between licensing. I don’t mind paying but it’s such a pain.

If you’re off their radar, stay off their radar.

I don't report and haven't had any fine. My dog on the other hand is legit

I’ve never licensed a pet in any state I’ve lived (Va, Md, Ct, Ny, Nj). No vet cares. No landlord cares. Why should I?

Crap. So once I'm in the indoor cat licensing cycle, I can't escape?

well obviously when your pet dies, you're off the hook

We kept getting letters to renew a license for a pet we never owned. We called them to let them know we had never owned Sneakers the calico cat but they didn’t believe us and kept asking for proof. Eventually the stopped after a few months.

I know someone who had to call animal control for some kind of wildlife (forget exactly what). Officer arrived, saw a dog and cat, checked that no licenses were on file and issued a fine.

Vets apparently report giving a rabies vaccine so the county gets a trail eventually. Fairfax County, VA at least.

Yes. Vet here - this is the case. Vet here. All Rabies vaccines are reported to Fairfax County by sending them copies of all of our rabies certificates. Out of county certs are mailed to the appropriate jurisdiction.

It is the law in Ffx to license your dog.

A dog is not the same as an indoor cat, though.

I have never licensed any of my dogs (MoCo). They go to the vet annually and are up to date with all shots and preventatives.
