Ughhh I’m frustrated. We really needed to do this med break bc my 13 year old needs to gain weight. But I’m frustrated bc he was on a combo of Intuniv and Metadate that worked beautifully and he had a great school year. Now he’s going to sleepaway camp this week and I’m worried it will be a lot less successful than it could have been on meds.
These choices suck. |
| Why not wait a week? |
| There are ways to gain weight other than to set him up for failure at camp. High calorie breakfasts, cyproheptadine, meal replacement shakes (Boost, ensure) as a snack when he's not feeling hungry. Also, is he growing taller even if he's not gaining weight? |
This. |
| Why wouldn’t you wait a week? |
| What does “less successful” mean? Our kids can’t be perfect. |
Not the OP, but it's not about adults demanding/expecting perfection. It's about giving kids the tools so that they are in control of their bodies and choices. After a good year in which he experienced that success, it will be frustrating for him to lose it, regardless of any grace the adults have. |
| I’d reconsider your plan and do his med break when he returns home. There are a lot more social and executive function demands at sleepaway camp. |
| Don't do that to the camp counselors and other kids. Family just did that on a shared vacation and it it was not ideal, frustration all around. |
| Former camp counselor: please don't do this unless your doc says it's the only way. |
Don't do that to the *child.* |
Agree - and we've been in the same boat. |
| Sleep away camp doesn’t seem like the time for a med break. |
| why would you have to stop the intuniv? It's a nonstimulant. And yea, sleep away camp does NOT seem like the time for a med break. |
| If you haven’t started tapering, do NOT do this. You can’t quit these meds cold Turkey. Speaking from experience here. |
